Emergency Preparedness

Lockdown

A lockdown is initiated when there is an immediate threat of violence, such as gunfire, and when a building evacuation could be fatal.  Lockdown orders will be given by the President or his designee, the Philadelphia or Lower Merion Police Departments, or other emergency responders.  The notification to initiate a lockdown may be disseminated in a number of different ways to include public address systems, emergency text messaging, and word of mouth.  Public Safety will secure building entrances and swipe access card readers, ensuring that no unauthorized individuals leave or enter the building. During a lockdown, all occupants are to remain in their rooms and lock all doors and windows.  Occupants are advised to further secure rooms by using a door wedge or other barricade.  Turn off all lights and close blinds if it appears safe to do so.  Lay flat on the floor away from windows or seek protective cover behind solid objects such as thick desks, filing cabinets, or concrete walls.  Remain quiet and silence all cell phones.  If safe to do so, call Public Safety to advise them of your location and the number of occupants in your area.  Do not open your door or leave your lockdown area until the “all clear” has been given by Public Safety/law enforcement personnel.
