Upcoming training
DOT/EPA Hazardous Materials Training

 

Required for: Employees who handle, ship (or prepare for shipment) hazardous materials, potentially harmful hazardous research materials, or hazardous waste. Supervisors of these employees need to attend as well.

Waste includes Universal Waste.


Frequency: At least every three years.

Contents: The training is designed to teach the employee proper packaging, labeling, manifesting and shipping requirements. This is an extensive course which must be completed in its entirety and must conform to current EPA regulatory and DOT shipping requirements.

Trainer: Environmental Health and Safety/contractor.

Saint Joseph's University Employee Environmental Health and Safety Training Courses

The following training courses will be offered in 2012. Announcements will appear on the HSE website and through e-mail communications:

1) Electric Arc Flash Safety

Required for: Employees exposed to high voltage electrical equipment

Frequency: Every two years or newly hired employees

Contents: Safety and Clothing requirements for workers working on high voltage electrical switches and similar equipment.

Trainer: Certified Arc Flash trainer

Schedule: September 5th and 12th, 2012 10:00-11:00  Location:  Haub Large Maguire

2) Asbestos Awareness Training

Required for:  All employees whose work may bring them into contact with asbestos- containing materials. Examples include Facilities, Public Safety, Housekeeping and IT

Frequency: Upon initial assignment, and every two years thereafter.

Contents: Training covers hazard recognition, protective measures and work techniques

Trainer: Environmental Health and Safety.

Schedule:  Spring 2013

3). Blood-borne Pathogens (BBP) Awareness

 

Required for:  Any employee who may contact infected human blood or other fluids.

Frequency: Upon initial assignment, and annually thereafter.

Contents: Definitions of BBP, emergency response requirements, exposure and incidents reporting.

Trainer: Environmental Health and Safety.

4). Chemical Hygiene Plan

 

Required for:  All employees working in laboratories or chemical use areas.

Frequency: At the time of employees' initial assignment to work area where hazardous chemicals are present and prior to reassignments. Training is determined by the individual department and/or laboratory and should be a regular, continuing activity, not necessarily an annual exercise.

Content: Laboratory and departmental-specific chemical hygiene plans, the appropriate standard and the measures employees can take to protect themselves from those hazards present in the work area. Training includes hazard recognition, protective measures and emergency procedures for each specific work area, hazard or extremely hazardous chemical, chemical spill cleanup procedures and chemical storage requirements at a minimum.

5). Confined Space Operations Training

 

Required for:  All employees who may enter or standby for the entry of another worker into a confined space, such as pipes, tanks, boilers, pits, ducts, excavations, vaults and tunnels.

Frequency: Upon initial assignment, when procedures or operations change; annually.

Contents: Training includes hazard recognition, permit procedures, standby procedures and emergency procedures. NO employee may enter a confined space without having had this training and different training requirements apply to the supervisors, entrants and attendees. (Note: written certification of training is required).

Trainer: Environmental Health and Safety.

                     April 11th, 2012, 10:00am to Noon--Location:  North Lounge

 

6). DOT Security Plan Training

 

Required for: Employees who receive, monitor delivery of or ship (sign-for or unload) hazardous Materials or hazardous waste.

Frequency: At least every two years.

Contents: The training is designed to be on the alert for breaches in security, potential terrorist activity and proper shipment and receipt of hazardous materials. Information to be included is the institution's Security plan.

Trainer: Environmental Health and Safety/contractor.

7). DOT Hazardous Materials Training

 

Required for: Employees who ship (or prepare for shipment) hazardous materials, potentially harmful hazardous research materials, or hazardous waste. Supervisors of these employees need to attend a modified training session.

Frequency: At least every three years.

Contents: The training is designed to teach the employee proper packaging, labeling, manifesting and shipping requirements. This is an extensive course which must be completed in its entirety and must conform to current DOT shipping requirements.

Trainer: Environmental Health and Safety/contractor.

8). Emergency Preparedness Training

 

Required for:  All employees.

Frequency: Annually

Contents: Fire drills and emergency evacuation procedures, exiting, and rally points. (Note: each building must review and exercise the emergency plan for their particular area at least annually and for each new employee)

Trainer: Public Safety

9). Emergency Response Training

 

Required for: Public Safety, Auxiliary Services, Environmental Health and Safety and Facilities personnel

Recommended for:  Employees working specific on-campus events involving crowds (such as security personnel at public events and theatre stage managers at a performance).

Frequency: Upon initial assignment and as appropriate thereafter. Frequent training exercises (either tabletop or actual scenarios) are recommended.

Contents: Covers life safety, exiting, emergency actions and hazard recognition for public events; as well as actions to be taken in the event of a campus emergency. Specific training on the Emergency Response Plan and Incident Command are recommended.

10). Ergonomics/ Manual Lifting Materials Handling Training

 

Recommended for  All employees who lift, carry or handle heavy or bulky materials, or must frequently lift, carry or handle even light objects. Administrative employees and faculty members who have risk for soft tissue injuries.


Frequency: Upon initial assignment; annually.

Contents: Training includes ergonomic hazard recognition, proper lifting and material handling techniques, protective measures and personal protective equipment.

Trainer: Ergonomics consultant

 

Schedule:  June, 20th, 2012, 10:00am to Noon, -Location:  Banquet hall south

                    June 27th, 2012, 10:00am to Noon --Location:  Morre Career Services

 

11). Fire Extinguisher Hands-on Training

 

Required for: All employees who are required to respond to a fire as part of their job responsibilities, those who work with flammable chemicals and open flames, maintenance workers, welders and electricians.

Recommended for:  All employees who work in remote areas of the campus, individuals who work in trades shops and trades classrooms, and janitors.

Frequency: Annually.

Contents: Hands-on use of fire extinguisher to extinguish a live fire. Demonstration of effective fire-fighting techniques

 12). Hazard Communication (Right-to-Know)

 

Required for:  All employees not covered under the Chemical Hygiene Plan requirements and who are potentially exposed to chemicals at work.

Recommended for:  All employees who handle or are exposed to chemicals.

Frequency: At the time of their initial assignment and whenever a new physical or health hazard is introduced into the workplace; annually.

Contents: Include location and availability of HazCom program, MSDSs, physical and health hazards of the chemicals in the work area, methods and operations to detect release of chemicals, and measure to take to protect themselves from hazards.

Trainer: Environmental Health and Safety.

13). Ladder Safety Training


Required for: All employees who work on or climb portable extension, straight or
stepladders in the course oftheir work.

Recommended for: Facilities, Athletics, IT.

Frequency: Upon initial assignment.

Contents: Training focuses on safe use of ladders and unsafe conditions to avoid.

Trainer: Environmental Health and Safety.

14). Lock Out/Tag Out (The control of hazardous energy)

 

Required for:  Any employee whose job requires operation of equipment when servicing or maintenance is performed.

Frequency: Upon initial assignment; and as the job, process, procedure, or equipment change; annually.

Contents: Ensure that the purpose and function of the Energy Control Program, the knowledge and skills required for the safe application, usage, and removal of the energy controls are understood by employees. Training is required on specific LOTO procedures to be used by individual employees.

Trainer: Environmental Health and Safety.

15). Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

 

Required for:  Any individual who uses PPE to perform various work functions.  Examples include Facilities trade personnel, Public Safety, Housekeeping, Health Environment and Safety 

Frequency: Changes in the workplace, PPE used or demonstrated inadequacies in employee understanding; annually.

Contents: Covers the basics of selection, use and care of eye, face, hand, body, head, and musculoskeletal protective devices; when and what to wear and how to work properly. (Note written certification of training is required).

Trainer: Environmental Health and Safety.

16). Power Tools Training

 

Required for:  All employees who operate power tools, including compressed air, electrical and cartridge equipment.

Frequency: Upon initial assignment, and as needed, thereafter.

Contents: Training covers hazard recognition and safe operating techniques.

Trainer: Environmental Health and Safety.

 

Schedule: November 7th and 14th,2012, 11:00am to noon   Location:  Haub Large Maguire

 

17). Respiratory Protection

 

Required for:  Individuals who must wear respirators of any kind in the performance of their work; all employees who are required to or choose to wear respiratory protection. Employees required to wear respirators must have a  medical evaluation, training, and pulmonary function testing. Examples include Facilities trade personnel, Public Safety, Housekeeping, Health Environment and Safety 

Frequency: Annually, along with an annual medical evaluation requiring a pulmonary function test and fit tests.

Contents: Proper use of respirators and their limitations, safe use of respirators in dangerous atmospheres that might be encountered in normal operations or emergencies. Every respirator wearer shall receive fitting instructions including demonstrations and practice in how the respirator should be worn, how to adjust it, and how to determine if it fits properly. Training includes respiratory hazard recognition, respirator selection, use, limitations and care for each type of respirator on which an employee is to qualify.

18). Hazardous Waste Satellite Accumulation Area Training

 

Required for:  Individuals who accumulate chemical wastes at, or near, the point of generation before proper disposal.

Frequency: Upon initial assignment, and annually thereafter.

Contents: Inspection, labeling and containment requirements for all containers used for accumulation: and chemical pick-up request procedures for full containers.

Trainer: Chemical Hygiene Officer

19). Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures (SPCC)

 

Required for: Employees who maintain and inspect oil containing vessels

 

Frequency: Annually or when significant changes occur

 

Contents: Discussion of SPCC Plan and inspection requirements

 

Trainer: Environmental Health and Safety.

 

Schedule:  Facilities staff meeting; March or April 2012, 10:00am. Moore

 

 

20). Universal Waste Management

 

Recommended for: Facilities staff who collect and manage universal wastes.

Frequency: Annually.

Contents: Covers the storage, labeling, management and disposal requirements for universal wastes such as mercury-containing lamps, PCB ballasts, pesticides and rechargeable batteries

Trainer: Environmental Health and Safety.

21) Lead Renovation Standard
