Web Publishing: How-To Access the Server

After the "SJU Web" site has been created within Dreamweaver, you can access the server to get the current files residing on the server and put new files onto the server via the site panel, which is shown in figures 1A and 1B.

Using Check In/Check Out

If you’re working in a collaborative environment, you can check files in and out from the server. If you’re the only person working on the remote server, you can use the Put and Get commands without checking files in or out (see Getting and putting files).

Checking out a file is the equivalent of declaring “I’m working on this file now—don’t touch it!” When a file is checked out, Dreamweaver displays the name of the person who checked out the file in the Site panel, along with a red check mark (if a team member checked out the file) or green check mark (if you checked out the file) next to the file’s icon.

Checking in a file makes the file available to other team members to check out and edit. When you check in a file after editing it, your local version becomes read-only and a lock symbol appears beside the file in the Site panel to prevent you from making changes to the file.

Checking files in to and out of the server

The Dreamweaver Check In/Check Out system uses the following symbols in the Site panel:

  • Green check mark indicates that you have the file checked out.
  • Red check mark indicates that another team member has the file checked.
  • Lock symbol indicates that the file is read-only (Windows) or locked (Macintosh).

If you check out a file and then decide not to edit it (or decide to discard the changes you made), you can undo a check out.

To check out files to the server within the Site panel select the file(s) you want to check in and do the following:

  1. Click the Check Out button on the Site panel toolbar.
  2. Click Yes at the prompt to download dependent files along with the selected files or click No to refrain from downloading dependent files.

Note: To ensure that you have local copies of all dependent files you should download them periodically from the server. But if you are sure you have the latest versions of the dependent files on your computer, there’s no need to download them again.

A green check mark appears beside the file’s icon indicating that you have checked it out.

To check in files to the server within the Site panel select the file(s) you want to check in and do the following:

  1. Click the Check In button on the Site panel toolbar.
  2. Click No at the prompt to upload dependent files along with the selected files.

Note: DO NOT upload dependent files when uploading new files to the server. Because you have read-only access to the core resources (such as images) you are using from the website, you will recieve a large amount of errors when trying to upload dependent files. ALWAYS select NO when prompted, then UPLOAD any dependent files that you have created INDIVIDUALLY.

A lock symbol appears beside the file’s icon indicating that it’s now read-only.

Getting and putting files

If you’re the only person working on the remote site, however, you can use the Get and Put commands to transfer files without checking them in or out.

Getting files from the server

To get files from the server select the desired file(s) to download and do the following:

  1. Click the Get button on the Site panel toolbar.

To stop the file transfer at any time, click the Cancel button in the status dialog box. The transfer may not stop immediately.

To put files onto the server select the desired file(s) to upload and do the following:

  1. Click the Put button on the Site panel toolbar.

If the file hasn’t been saved, a dialog box will appear allowing you to save the file before putting it on the remote server.

To save the file, click Yes; to put the previously saved version on the server, click No. If you choose not to save the file, any changes you’ve made since last time you saved will not be put onto the server. However, the file remains open, so you can still save the changes after putting the file on the server if you want.
