General Programming Topics Offered:
A Candid Conversation: Myth-Busting with Community Standards
What is the Office of Community Standards all about? I was documented - now what? Hypothetical Scenarios... Anonymous question and answer period. Honest advice for tough situations!
Social Networking/Cyber-bullying/Illegal Downloading
Facebook, like much of the Internet, has limitless POSITIVE potential. But, there are things to be aware of when you create that Facebook account or click submit on that picture upload. This session will focus on the perils of Facebook, career implications of postings, possible Community Standards violations, and most importantly - safety on the web. We will also discuss cyber-bullying and the dangers of illegal downloading. Technology is awesome, if used responsibly.
Your Reaction When Documented: De-Escalating a Situation
What is the best way to respond to a situation being documented (by Residence Life Staff, SJU Public Safety, Lower Merion Township Police, Philadelphia Police, etc...)? Participants will walk away with ideas and skills to manage and de-escalate a situation. The take home message will be: "Your Attitude Counts."
Social Host Responsibility: Those Who Host...Lose The Most!
Section 6310.1 of the Pennsylvania Crimes Code (Title 18): A person commits a misdemeanor of the third degree if he/she intentionally and knowingly sells, furnishes, or purchases with the intent to sell or furnish any liquor or malt or brewed beverages to persons less than 21 years of age. Did you know that misdemeanor offenses appear on a criminal background check? This includes COLLEGE STUDENTS - under 21 and over! Discussions will include legal, responsible, and considerate hosting of events where alcohol is served, especially off-campus.
Decisions You Make Now Will Impact Your Future!!
What is my educational record/student file? Will certain violations prevent me from getting the job I want? Why would certain professions require a background check? What if I have an alcohol violation? Or furnish alcohol to someone under 21? What is the truth about Fake ID's? What about Facebook and MySpace? Does it matter if I am cooperative and complete my sanctions on time? The Office of Community Standards performs background checks on current and former students on an almost daily basis. What impact can your student file have on your future?
Diversity Initiatives / Social Justice on Campus
Members of the Office of Community Standards staff have been trained by the Anti-Defamation League to facilitate diversity dialogue on campus. The ADL's "A Campus of Difference" program can be offered in collaboration with the Office of Institutional Diversity at SJU to your community or group.
What role can your community or group play in the movement towards a socially just campus, community, and world? Office of Community Standards staff members are willing to come into your community or group and discuss the roles that each one of us can play in establishing and maintaining a climate of justice and peer accountability.
Bystander Intervention / Peer Accountability
What can I (or should I) do when people in my community are violating community standards? Are there things that I can (or should) do to confront the vandalism and inappropriate behavior in my house, wing, floor, or building? How do we hold each other accountable for conduct that is detrimental to the SJU community? How can I be an effective bystander and how can I intervene?
