Norovirus Update

  • The Philadelphia Department of Public Health released an advisory statement in mid-January that norovirus is on the uptick in Philadelphia. Student HealthCenter continuously tracks incidence of many communicable diseases including norovrius-related gastroenteritis. As of February 10, 2012, SHC has NOT seen an increase in students reporting vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Important considerations:
    • Norovirus typically resolves on its own within a few days without specific treatment (often in 48 hours or less)
    • Testing generally does not change the course of treatment and is used mostly in outbreak situations.
    • The virus is highly contagious; the single best way to limit spread of norovirus is HANDWASHING
  • Norovirus can cause severe vomiting and diarrhea accompanied by nausea, abdominal cramps, and fatigue. Students who experience these symptoms, should call the Student Health Center at610-660-1175 for advice.

The Student Health Center strives to assist students in the pursuit of their academic goals and personal development by identifying and addressing health situations which impede student learning. This mission is served by the provision of high quality health care as well as health promotion that facilitates the development of the whole person.
