Emergent Literacy for Early Childhood Education Certificate Program
In partnership with the United Way of SEPA Early to Read Project and Saint Joseph's University

Essential Topics in Early Childhood Education: Developmentally Appropriate Practice

This course is designed for the cohort teachers who are participating in the Early 2 Read project funded by the United Way and the Knight Foundation. The focus of this course is to explore the developmentally appropriate practices in teaching Pre-school children. The course aims to help the cohort teachers to better understand the intellectual, social, emotional and physical development of children, to further develop their knowledge and skills in designing and implementing developmentally appropriate curriculum and instruction, and to communicate effectively with their children's families and caregivers. Special attention will be given to practices that help meet the needs of all children, especially children with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Students will continue to incorporate the national standards of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and PA State Early Learning Standards into their lesson plans. SELA/ECERS-R will be used in structuring and designing the developmentally appropriate practice in their classrooms.
