Recycling Meeting Minutes March 12th, 2008 with Jim Torrance (AKA The
>man)
>
>JT: Recycle mania middle of it now 6000 pounds recycled this past
>week. Cardboard is leading the way. 11th place as far as northeast
>schools go in cardboard ???53 in total 400 in cardboard. Check out the
>web page. There numbers for APG are low.
>KK: These numbers are great!
>JP: I agree!
>JT: There is going to be a contest for a recycling logo. Mike McCann
>knows a lot about that you should contact him???.o yea there is a prize
>too.
> JP: Just St. Joes?
>Jt: We need more signage to get our name out there, as well as so
>people know where and what to recycle. I was work for Arthur Jackson.
>I have two people to go to all the 49 buildings on campus. It???s a
lot
>of work for them. Work studies may start to help out with this job
>because it would make everyone???s job a lot easier. We will be
>increasing the number of containers on campus. AWARENESS!! Check out
>the hawk next week. Our numbers should be in there. Whole last year
>we did nine tons???.we tripled that and we are not even done the school
>year. Nova has 109,000 pound they are really good???very good program
>over there.
>KK: Green Cow tried to get in contact with them, but from what I heard
>they have not responded.
> JT: Yea we are trying to and we are getting a van to tour the
>facilities of allied wasted, or recycling company.
>Kk: Could we get to do that on Earth Day or during Earth week?
>JT: Sounds great! They are building a new plant and with very new
>high-tech technology???amazing, but not until September.
>KK: I bet we have problems with contamination.
>JT: Yes, we have no choice, but to just throw that stuff away because
>I???m not going to have my employees pulling out banana peels and other
>trash???.That is not their job.
>JP: What do you think about temp signage?
>JT: This has been discussed a lot???where? When? And make sure it
looks
>nice.
>JP: Maybe put it on the trash cans so people might realize what they
>have in their hand is recyclable?
>JT: Not a bad idea we tried to do some cardboard containers, but they
>were taken or stolen, let???s just say they cannot be found. And the
>blue ones are not cheap???cardboard is gone???.temp sings are good.
>JP: It wouldn???t be a problem for us to do.
>JT: We just want them to look good and we have the website, but who
>knows if people visit the site.
>KK: What if we did a program for the freshmen dorms?
>JT: Lafarge did have a competition and it worked really well. We
>bought more containers. We can get some boxes for that.
>KK: Boxes in every suite would be really good I know in my suite that
>is what we do. So why not the rest of the dorms?
>JT: I???m willing to give the boxes especially if you would like to
take
>that further you know put together a program.
>KK: If it???s there people will probably use it, I hope.
>JT: I think there are 14 suites in Sourin, so that would be 14 boxes.
>I can get my crew to empty them too. If trash ends up in the
>containers though we are gonna have to pull them. This would also only
>be for APG. We wouldn???t be putting paper ones in the suites.
>KK: What about cutting a hole in the APG ones in the caf???
>JT: All the new containers will have holes so I???m not sure if that
>will work if the whole is there they will hopefully know what that if
>for???we are working on that. Also all the old containers, after we
get
>the new holed containers, will be used for paper, so we are going to
>hold off on that.
>JT: I???m surprised we don???t have more APG being recycling because
the
>dumpster next to Sourin is always full of APG, but the weighing always
>come back less than expected. For example: the campus does 3 pounds of
>cardboard per person, less then one pound of paper per person, and even
>less than that for APG per person.
>KK: I guess people just crumple up the paper and throw it away and
>think nothing of it.
>JT: Have you seen the ???Recall??? boxes on campus? They are for
>shredding confidential documents. I think a decent amount of paper
>ends up in those, and we don???t count that for recycle mania. There
>have been more requests for them on campus too, but the good news is
>that the paper from that is recycled. We also in the last year, since
>we started, have recycled batteries , light bulbs, leaves???all that
>stuff is still recycled, but it does not count for recycle mania. We
>are also in contact with ???Cartridge World??? about recycling printer
>cartridges, so we are hoping to start that up soon.
>JP: Is there somewhere or someone on campus where you could bring all
>this stuff too?
>JT: What you can do is email recycling@sju.edu and we would come and
>pick it up. You can also recycle light bulbs, but that is handled
>under a different department than us, facilities. There is a battery
>drop off in Lafarge, and in the Overbrook facilities office. Mainly,
>we would like people to email us to pick these things up because the
>containers are expensive and we already have one ???missing.??? We
also
>are looking into recycling cell phones.
>KK: I think I saw a cell phone bin in Sourin at the beginning of the
>year?
>JP: I think that was for AMA.
>JT: One of my goals is to be like UCSB because they have a very
>impressive recycling program. They have palletes full of recycling. We
>know that this is our first year and we are off to a very good start,
>but there is A LOT of improvement to be made. We are starting off with
>basics and we need to work on getting out there so the students know.
>Signage would be a lot of help and we could use more containers because
>there are not enough.
>JP: If you need any help we are here and willing!
>JT: I sent Mike McCann the job description for the work study, so if
>students are looking for extra cash they should look into that.
>Hopefully that will be getting underway this semester or atleast
>definitely next semester. Mike has done a whole lot to get all of this
>under way. He is a great guy.
>KK: Yea???he???s dreamy. Do we have paper recycling in the areas or
>campus where a lot of paper is used like the libraries and computer
>labs? I???m not sure if they are, but I just think that they were
serve
>a great purpose right there.
>JP: There is no APG in Campbell Library, but I know there is a paper
>one, but it could have a better position in the library because it???s
in
>the corner.
>JT: Where would you like to see it?
>JP: I would say by the doors because you go in and out
>KK: Yea, maybe around by the door and printer.
>JT: I???ll be able to get those down there.
>KK: There is also a lab in bellermaine right?
>JP: Then in the SC too.
>JT: There should be recycling in the SC. I???m almost positive.
Where
>do you live on campus?
>JP: I live in Merion Gardens.
>JT: Your recycling is in the basement, is that fine?
>JP: I think that???s fine cause that???s where our trash is, but
everyone
>once and a while it will be over flowing.
>JT: Yea I can talk to my guys about that. It would be nice to put a
>couple extra in the mail room.
>JP: That is a good idea because lots of people throw away their mail.
>JT: We will put some there.
