Saint Joseph's University

Department of Biology

Overview

The Department of Biology occupies the second floor of the Science Center, and includes two classrooms, ten teaching laboratories, and five research laboratories. The Department of Biology at Saint Joseph's has always been known as a training ground for individuals pursuing professional careers in science.

The department consists of ten full-time faculty, representing diverse biological specialties. All of the faculty are engaged in productive research, and students are encouraged to work with them as colleagues on research projects. Many of the students have delivered papers at national and international scientific conferences and have had their work published in scientific journals.

The faculty has been active in pursuing and obtaining outside funding. In the last six years, the department has received nearly one million dollars in grants to support its faculty research and instructional programs. Supporting agencies include the National Institute of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The latter supports a summer research institute in which students can conduct research with one of the faculty on a full time basis for ten weeks.
