Welcome to the home page of Dr. Jonathan Hodgson. This page contains a thumbnail sketch of my interests as well as pointers to pages that deal with various courses that I teach.

Originally trained as a differential topologist, where I worked on Poincare duality spaces. I have most recently been working in computer science.

My main interest in computer science is in Artificial Intelligence. I am particularly interested in the question of how the formulation of a problem affects the ease with which it can be solved. By changing the representation of a problem it is often possible to simplify the solution process considerably. I am currently investigating ways in which one can automate this reformulation process.

When I write programs I prefer to use prolog and thus have a special interest in logic programming. I have studied the semantics of exception handling in standard Prolog. As an offshoot of this I serve as chair of X3J17, the US technical committee for the standardisation of the Prolog language. The first part of the standard was be published in 1995. The second part which will deal with modules is in the course of development.
