CSC 5125 Assignments Spring 1997
Where possible assignments should be submitted on disk, preferably
an ASCII file in HTML format.
- Due January 30th
a). Create your own home page, provide me with its web address.
You can view the source of any web page from Netscape by using
the View source option which is under the Edit menu
Note that you should put your home page in a subdirectory called
pub_html. This is a requirement of our local web server. Set the
permissions on this directory to (at least 751) and on the web
pages to 644. Your home directory needs permissions of 751 as
well.
b). Do exercises 17 and 22 on page 75 of Tanenbaum. Format your
answers as HTML documents.
- Due February 13th 1997.
Do the following exercises from Tanenbaum: page 171 nos 5, 15, 41
and pages239 nos 1, 10 and 13.
Put all the answers in a single file and email me the name of the file.
Place the file in your own pub_html directory. Do not link the file to
your home page.
- Due March 21st Do the following exercises from Tanenbaum. p 337 nos
21,24, 35, 40 and pagesd 474 nos 9, 11 and 13.
Please email me the html file containing your answers.
- Due April 15th
Use either sockets, RPC, or streams to implement a simple file transfer program.
You should allow the user to list the remote directory and to move from
directory to directory. Model the interface on ftp.
You should provide evidence that the program works.
- Due May 2nd.
Find an article on networks and /or distributed systems in a recent
(post May 1996) magazine, such as Computer, the Communications ofd the ACM, etc..
Summarize the article and prepare a web page containing the summary. The web page must contain the
full name of the article, the author and the publication in which the artcle appeared.
You must hand in a copy of the article with your web summary. Further no two of you may summarize the
same article. You ust therefor provide me with the title of your article by April 1st. There are no
exceptions to this policy.
Please be aware that I will be psoting all of the articles on the web pages of this course.
