Course Outline

Introduction
Basic Ideas: Networks and Distributed Systems, The OSI and TCP/IP models.
The Physical layer
The "wires" and switches
The Logical Link layer
The protocols allowing reliable point-to-point transmission of frames of data.
The Medium Access layer
How one controls access to a shared communication channel. The IEEE 802 suite of standards
The network layer
Routing, congestion control and internetworking.
The transport layer
The first layer outside the network, this is where you connect your machine to the rest of the world, sockets, the transport layer interconnect, and remote procedure call.
The application layer
All the "good" stuff, file transfer, email, name services, the web etc.
