In order to learn multiplication, children in our culture have to memorize
the times table from 1x1 through 9x9 and understand how to multiply by
0 and powers of 10. Once you have done that, the distributive law
does the rest.

If you were living in a culture that used a base 20 positional system (like
the Mayans did), how large a times table would you have to memorize?

If you were living in a culture that used a base 60 positional system (like
the Babylonians did), how large a times table would you (theoretically)
have to memorize? Do you think the Babylonians really did this?

We have seen several examples of how religion and superstition
have influenced developments in mathematics in many (and, indeed, most)
cultures. Using examples from the course packet (p. 32-181), class
discussions and handouts, and, if you wish, from outside sources, develop
several examples of this phenomenon. You can either choose one culture
and discuss mathematical ideas in that culture's religion, or choose a
mathematical topic and trace it through several cultures and religions.
