Project 2
Multicultural Mathematics
Dr. Rachel Hall
Project due Friday, December 10th, in class
Your composition(s) should be 1-2 minutes long in total, and contain
at least 500 notes. Compositions will be graded on satisfaction of
requirements, completeness and neatness of documentation, and originality.
Each composition must contain the following
-
an introduction
-
a tihai ending
-
an underlying rhythm cycle throughout the composition, with the possible
exception of the introduction
-
a solo by at least two instruments
-
an arithmetic series
-
a polyrhythm
Use of the following compositional techniques is optional
-
repetition
-
variations in density
-
complementary patterns
-
expansion or contraction of patterns
-
translation of patterns
The ``rules'':
-
The composition must maintain the same time signature throughout
-
All instruments must end on the same beat, even if the instruments have
a rest on that beat. The ending beat must be the first beat of the
measure.
-
No two instruments may duplicate the same part for the entire composition.
Required documentation
Example
-
A printout of your abcdrums entry
-
The printout of the PDF file generated by Convert-o-matic Change:
A PDF file won't be generated if your composition has more than 4 parts
(it probably will). So instead, e-mail me the ABC source generated
by Convert-o-matic. Just send the file itself--don't convert to a
Word document.
-
The MIDI file generated by Convert-o-matic, which
should be e-mailed to me (rhall@sju.edu)
-
A graph paper diagram of your rhythm cycle
-
A computation of the density of your rhythm cycle, in notes per cycle and
notes per minute
