High school courses in advanced mathematics and computer science expose students to critical problem solving techniques, career opportunities in technology and science, and prepare students for college. Students at many of the public and charter schools within Philadelphia do not have the option of taking these courses. They are, therefore, at a competitive disadvantage when they go to college and often do not pursue or succeed in programs of study in these fields. We are losing a vast pool of talent that is desperately needed in today's workplace.
PACMACS is a program which involves the recruitment of 10 bright (top 10% of class), high school students (with preference given to minority students) a year to attend mathematics and computer science classes at Saint Joseph's University (SJU) during their junior/senior years of high school. The students will be recruited from school that do not have the resources to offer advanced courses in mathematics and computer science; have large minority enrollments and have established a relationship with SJU through participation in other programs.
Students will be enrolled in two regularly scheduled college level math and computer science classes at SJU per semester. They will be integrated into classes with full-time undergraduates. The classes will meet three afternoons a week and be taught by full-time professors. Students will also have additional access to their professors during office hours. Upperclassman majoring in mathematics or computer science will mentor the students and provide academic support. As part of their coursework, students will use a state-of-the-art computer laboratory. Each student will be provided textbooks, calculators and all other course materials.
The program will offer career guidance (monthly seminars led by professors describing careers in mathematics and computer science), and information on the college application and financial aid process. Students will be invited to participate in two special social programs each semester (e.g., sporting events or student drama productions). SJU will provide each student with an identification card, enabling access to campus facilities, including the library, fitness center and student activity center. Additionally, partial payment of students' transportation expenses will be made.
