The 2006 Sprint Series Finals will be held at Hickory Run State Park in northeastern Pennsylvania the weekend of September 16-17. This is the NOD (National Orienteering Day) weekend and the annual DVOA training weekend.

Who can run in the Sprint Series Finals?  ANYONE.  Since January 1, 2006 there have been roughly 100 sprints hosted around the US and Canada.  The results of these sprints will be used to seed runners for the finals using each person's 8 best sprints. But it's not necessary to run 8 sprints, or even 1 sprint, to run in the finals.  Anyone can participate. The results from the series just determine which heat you go in and how you are seeded in that heat.

There will be 16 in each heat. 12 are determined by the standings in the series, 4 are "wild cards" -- that makes it possible to move someone into a higher heat who for one reason or another (injury, location, organizing sprints that they couldn't run in,...) didn't place so high in the standings as their ability would indicate.  Last year we had one women's heat and three men's heats. This year, well, it depends on how many people enter. And back to the original point -- anyone can enter, whether you've sprinted a lot, or a little, or not at all this year.  So register now and come on out and join the fun.

SCHEDULE

Saturday 1:00pm
Farsta Relay
Mass start, advanced level course.  Entry fee $10 per person.  Course set by Randy Hall.  Set in the little used northwest corner of the map.  SI epunching will be used and pre-registration is required if you don't want to be drawing your own map after the start!  Map scale  is 1:15,000.  Course is approximately 9km and consists of two loops.  If you don't want to run that far, team up with someone and each do one loop.  (Cost is still $10 per person - it's a team fundraiser after all! - and you should each register for the Farsta.  If you let us know ahead of time we can save on maps, so more money to the team, but you can also decide on the spot.)
Saturday late afternoon
One-on-one training
DVOA is looking for some elite level orienteers to provide one hour of one-on-one training for some of the advanced level attendees at the Saturday training.  Proceeds will benefit the US Team and suitable incentives are being worked out.  Please contact Sandy Fillebrown or Peter Gagarin if you are interested.
Saturday
6:00pm
Dinner
A dinner has been organized at the home of a friend of the event director who lives about 3 minutes from the I-80 exit of I-476.  Space is limited to 30 people so sign up early!  Directions will be available at registration.  Cost is $15 per person, children 12 and under free.  Menu. (Note: veggie burgers have been added to the menu.)
Saturday Night
Night-O
The traditional DVOA training Night-O event.  There is a beginner, intermediate and advanced course.  Fees are $5 per map ($4 for DVOA members) and you MUST be pre-registered.  (There will be no extra maps printed.)  Courses set by Clem McGrath.
Sunday

Sprints
Entry fee for all three sprints is $30 per person.  SI epunching will be used and pre-registration is required (unless you want to draw your own courses on the 1:15000 version of the map).  All sprint maps will be 1:5,000.
9:00am
Sprint I
The first round of the sprints.  Set by Clem McGrath.  Start/Finish at the Sand Spring Lake area.
11:00am
Sprint II
The second round of the sprints.  Set by Randy Hall.  Start/Finish at the Sand Spring Lake area.
2:00pm
Sprint III
The final round of the sprints.  Set by Clem McGrath   Start/Finish at Camp Daddy Allen.

Note:  The DVOA training weekend always fills to capacity and we would like to ensure that the Sprint Series Finals does not have any negative impact on the training.  Thus, if you register for the Sprint Finals you may NOT register for the DVOA training.  (Trainers, i.e. those doing the teaching, may register for the Sprints however.)  If you are traveling with family or friends who are not running in the sprints, there will be a local DVOA event on Sunday with White, Yellow, Orange, Green and Red courses that are open to the public.  Fees are $7 per map if you don't pre-register, $5 if you pre-register, and $4 if you pre-register and are a DVOA member.

Headquarters/registration will be at the pavilion at the Sand Spring Lake area (see below for directions).  It will be staffed from 10am-12pm on Saturday at which time it will get moved to the parking area of the Farsta until that finishes.  It will be staffed again back at the lake from the end of the Farsta until 5:30pm and then again Sunday morning starting as early as we can, probably around 7:30am.

Directions:

Take the I-476 (Northeast extension of the PA Turnpike) to the I-80 exit. Turn right at light onto PA Rt. 940 and follow west for 3 miles. Go south on PA Rt. 534.  There will be orange and white O signs directing you to the DVOA training site which is located at Camp Daddy Allen.  This is NOT where you want to go!!!  But we can't put up any more O signs or the folks coming for the training won't know where to go.  See the map of Hickory Run for where you want to be in the park:  Map of Hickory Run State Park
Nearby Airports: Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) in the Allentown/Bethlehem area is the closest; it's a small airport but an easy one hour drive if you can find a convenient flight.  Harrisburg International Airport (MDT),  Reading Regional Airport (RDG) and Newark International Airport (EWR) are all about two hours.  Philadelphia International (PHL) is about 2 and half hours.

Accommodations:

Epunching:

SportIdent epunching will be used for the Farsta Relay and for the Sprints.  If you do not have an e-card they will be available for rent for $2 for the weekend.  We will also have a limited number for sale at the event for $30. (Replacement cost for losing a rental is $35.)

Sprint Format:

The format for the sprints will be similar, and possibly identical, to that used in 2005.  Details will be posted soon.  In the meantime you can read about last year's format on Peter Gagarin's website.

Registration:   Current Registration List

Registration is required. Deadline for registering is September 10.  Seedings for the sprint heats will be done on September 11.  Please use the on-line registration form.  Payment will be accepted at the event, but mailing it in with a signed waiver form ahead of time will earn you the grateful appreciation of the organizers.  Additional contributions to the US Team will also be gratefully accepted.  Make checks payable to DVOA and send to:
