Abstract: Our recent work has been to enable content-based retrieval of CAD models from large engineering databases. This talk will present some of our results in this area, specifically:

  1. Use of design features (and design feature histories) to compare solid models of mechanical parts;
  2. Use of manufacturing/machining features to compare solid models of mechanical parts;
  3. Use of raw model geometry/topology to compare solid models of mechanical parts;

This work is highly interdisciplinary, drawing on and extending techniques from computer graphics, computer vision, multi-media databases, combinatorial algorithms, graph theory, as well as engineering design and solid modeling. We will discuss both the practical implications of the work as well as aspects of the problems' technical/computational challenges.

Presented by the SJU Math and Computer Science Department.
