Characterization of Fractals and Their Points
The Sierpinski Triangle and Beyond

Who: Vince Russo, Saint Joseph's University

When and Where: Thursday, September 11, in Barbelin 226 at 11:50.

Food? Yes, sandwiches, chips, and soda. Food will be available prior to the start of the colloquium in BL 226 beginning at 11:30. All are welcome.

Audience: Math faculty and students and others interested in fractals.

Abstract:

We study iterated function systems and the fractals they generate, though we restrict ourselves to functions generating reflections. We created a method for determining if a given point is in a given fractal. Directed graphs are used to display this method, and we use the graphs to generate the fractals directly. (However, you need not understand all of that to enjoy the presentation!)

The next colloquium is scheduled to be given by Saint Joseph's Faculty Member Amy Myers. She will speak on Thursday, October 9, 11:30-12:45.

Presented by the SJU Math and Computer Science Department.

Sean Forman and Jonathan Hodgson, colloquium committee
