For class on Thursday, August 30, 2001We will roll for a quiz.
We will discuss three voting methods: plurality, Borda count and plurality with elimination.
We will discuss three fairness criterion: majority criterion, Condorcet criterion, and monotonicity criterion.
You should know these voting methods and how to determine the winner of an election using them and which methods satisfy which criterion.

A Word about CalculatorsYou will need a calculator for this class. A calculator with combinations (usually an nCr key) and permutations (usually an nPr key) along with factorials would be best. You will also need to be able to do exponents like 4.31.08. Pretty much anything above a TI-23 will be able to do this sort of thing, so don't feel the need to spend $80 on a graphing calculator. If you have questions about your calculator please ask me.

IMDB: Tom StoppardA list of movies Tom Stoppard has been involved with. The list of plays is much, much longer. Also, I misspoke when I stated Ralph Fiennes was in "Shakespeare in Love". It was his little brother Joseph Fiennes.

Recap for August 27, 2001Assigned: Read sections 1.1 to 1.4
Remember that both classes meet in science 400 on Thursday.
We went over the syllabus. You are expected to know and follow the syllabus. A possible item on the quiz could deal with the syllabus or with my course expectations.
We discussed the topics that we are going to cover in the class during the semester.
We went through section 1.1 which deals solely with the construction of preference ballots and preference schedules. You should have in mind some possible ways to rank the items from a preference schedule.
