Business Math I
November 5, 2002
Fourth Exam Review. The fourth exam is Wednesday, December 5,
2002.
You may use a calculator on the exam. It would be
very helpful to have a calculator that has permutations and
combinations and you will need to know how to use it. You will not
have any notes or formulas available to you. Here is a summary of
topics covered in the fourth chapter (sections 4.1 to 4.3). There may
be other topics not listed here. You are responsible for all material
covered in class and on homework. If you can do all the problems from
these sections in chapter summary, you will do very well on the test.
- Section 4.1 You need to understand the multiplication
rule, permutations and combinations. When you use each. You should
understand some Venn diagrams and counting principles like addition
and complementarity.
- Section 4.2 You need to understand what a sample space
is and be able to list all the outcomes in the sample space for a
simple example. You should understand what a random experiment is.
You need to remember that the probability of an event is the number of
ways that an event can occur divided by the total number of outcomes.
You should understand how the graphical problems work (like the
dartboard). You should be able to use the complementarity principle.
You should know that the probability is in
and the sum of all
the outcomes adds up to one.
- Section 4.3 You should know what independence means and
how to compute conditional probabilities. You should be able to use
the total probability formula (as in problems 16 and 18). You should
be able to use the fact that events are independent to compute the
probability of both of them happening. You should be able to
recognize when an event is independent and when it isn't.
The exam is not yet completed, but I anticipate the test looking very
similar to the homework problems, perhaps, with some true/false,
multiple choice or matching questions as well.
As I've stated above, being able to do the homework from these
sections will prepare you quite well for the exam.
