Mon. & Thurs. (both Science 400), 2:30 - 3:45.
Textbook: Introduction
to Statistics and Data Analysis, by Roxy Peck, Chris Olsen and Jay
Devore. The text is bundled with a copy of SPSS and Doing
Data Analysis with SPSS 10.0 by Carver and Nash. We will move
quickly through the book and cover chapters 1-10.
SPSS: You will be expected to
use SPSS for statistical analysis of data. We will have a class to
introduce this package. A copy of SPSS is included with your book and
is already installed on university computers.
Goals and Prerequisites: This
is an introductory course in statistics. You will learn basic
statistical techniques and reasoning. We will discuss probability,
correlation, regression, random variables and several other topics.
Homework and Quizzes: We will
have from 3-6 homework sets. Some of these will be projects in which
you will be expected to collect and analyze data. You are certainly
allowed to work and discuss the homework with others, but the work you
turn in should be your own. Any copying of homework will result in a
zero on the assignment for all involved.
In addition, we will
have 8-12 weekly quizzes. You will not be able to make up quizzes for
any reason. Your worst quiz score will not go into your homework
grade.
Tests: There will be two
mid-term exams and a cumulative final exam. You will be provided fair
warning on when the mid-terms will be. Do not make travel plans
before finding out when the final will be.
Grading: I will follow a 100-90-80-70-60 grading scale.
| Homework and Quizzes | 30% |
| Midterms | 40% |
| Final | 30% |
Attendance: Each class is
important, and we will discuss new material each and every class
period. Failure to attend class will cause your performance in class
to suffer. If you know you will be missing an exam, you are to notify
me in advance, make up exams beforehand, and turn in any homework
early. In cases where you are ill, you will need a note from a
physician in order to make up an exam. When in doubt, e-mail or call
me.
Academic Honesty: You are
expected to know and follow the University's academic honesty policy.
Both copying other's work and allowing others to copy yours are
violations of this policy. On exams, use of unauthorized materials or
other forms of cheating will result in a 0 on the quiz or
exam, the notification of the Registrar's office, and potentially an F
in the course.
