Brief Business Calculus
March 31, 2004
Third Exam Review. The third exam is Tuesday, April 6
You will need a calculator that is capable of doing
logarithms and exponentials. Any calculator capable of doing symbolic
differentiation will not be allowed (for example the TI-89 and above).
You will not have any notes or formulas available to you. Here is a
summary of topics covered in the third part of the course. There may
be other topics not listed here. You are responsible for all material
covered in class and on homework.
I would say 40-50% for chapter 7, and 50-60% for chapter 8.
- Section 7.3 and 7.4 Optimization problems. How to set
them up and then when they are set up how to solve for them. I might
complete some problems half way and ask you to finish them up (I set
them up and you solve them) or I might ask you just to find the
equation for profit or some such thing. I might also ask a problem
where you have to complete the entire problem and get it correct to
get any credit.
- Section 8.1 Rules for logarithms and exponentials. How
to compute compounded and continuously compounded interest. What are
the rules for logarithms. If we invest $1,000 how long till we have
$3,000.
- Section 8.2 Differentiation of the exponentials and
logarithms. Taking derivatives for these problems. Perhaps finding
critical values for these problems.
- Section 8.3 Relative rates of change, Elasticity of
demand. There will be one problem from the homework in this section.
The exam is not yet completed, but I anticipate the test looking like
the homework problems except as stated above.
