- To study the game and find relationships between actions on the
field and the outcomes they produce.
- Sabermetrics resembles sociology or psychology instead of
physics and chemistry. It is difficult to perform experiments, but
you can observe and analyze what has happened.
- Sabermetrics is interested in long-term behavior. Can't explain
much about a single game or a short series. For example, just
because not bunting fails in a particular game doesn't mean it was a
bad strategy.
- Don't assume that the standard ideas are correct. Bill James
said that most of his findings came from checking on what
sportswriters said.
