Textbook: Precalculus: Essentials, 2nd edition, by Robert Blitzer, Pearson: Prentice-Hall Publishing, 2007.
Calculator: You may use a graphing calculator when working homework however you are NOT allowed to use graphing calculators on tests. Therefore I strongly urge you to have available a "regular" scientific calculator for tests.
Course Description: Precalculus is intended to help students make the transition into calculus. It is designed so that students will acquire a solid foundation in algebra and trigonometry. The course includes the study of (1) relations and functions, (2) polynomial and rational functions, (3) exponential and logarithmic functions, and (4) trigonometric functions. Precalculus is a fast-paced course and it is assumed that students enrolled in the course are already familiar with many concepts to be presented. Other topics such as systems of equations/inequalities and matrices/determinants are included as time permits.
Upon successful completion of the course a student should be able
to do the following:
Grading: Your grade for the semester will be based on three tests, homework assignments, class attendance and a comprehensive final exam.
3 In-Class Tests 50%
Homework 25%
Final Exam 20%
*Class Attendance 5% ______________________________________________ TOTAL 100%
Letter grades will be determined as follows:
A 96 - 100 A- 92 - 95
B+ 88 - 91 B 84 - 87
B- 80 - 83 C+ 76 - 79
C 72 - 75 C- 68 - 71
D+ 64 - 67 D 60 - 63
F 59 and below
TENTATIVE TEST DATES
Test 1: Thursday, September 27
Test 2:Thursday, October 25
Test 3:Thursday, November 29
Final Exam: Date to be determined by the Registrar's Office.
*Class Attendance: You must attend class 90% of the time (approximately 37 days out of 41) in order to receive the full 5% which is 30 points towards your grade at the end of the semester.
Academic Honesty: I will adhere to the Academic Honesty Policy as stated in the University Catalogue. In particular, anyone found cheating, copying, offering and/or receiving unauthorized assistance on tests or exams would be violating the University Academic Honesty Policy. All assignments, tests and/or final exams found to be in violation of this policy would receive a grade of zero. I strongly suggest that you read the Academic Honesty Policy in your University Catalogue.
Students with Disabilities: If you have a documented disability
(learning, physical, psychological)
for which you are or may be requesting reasonable academic adjustments,
you are encouraged to contact Services for Students with Disabilities,
Room 113 Science Center, 610-660-1774 or 610-660-1620 as early as possible
in the semester. Accomodations can only be provided to students
with current (within 3 years) documentation. You should take care
of this matter BEFORE Test 1.
