Autism Spectrum Disorder Endorsement
Expertise That is in High Demand
Research from the Centers for Disease Control estimates that one in every 88 children in the U.S. is diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum. This represents a 23 percent rise in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) from 2009. Corresponding with the rapid increase in autism spectrum disorder diagnoses is a strong demand for skilled teachers and educational support professionals to develop effective learning and behavioral interventions for this population of school-age children.
Curriculum Recognized for Excellence
The Special Education Department approved the SJU Autism Spectrum Disorder Program as an official Pennsylvania Department of Education endorsement in 2012.Saint Joseph’s offers a four-course (12-credit) autism spectrum disorder endorsement that focuses on appropriate assessment and research-based strategies with an emphasis on skill development and behavioral modification for students of all ages who have been diagnosed on the autism spectrum.
This endorsement program may be completed in as few as two semesters, offers hybrid courses and may be applied to continuing education units, such as Act 48, needed by practicing teachers. The endorsement may also be completed as added concentration within the M.S. special education program.
This endorsement is designed for special education teachers and individuals who possess interest in expanding their skills and knowledge in this area.
The demand for quality education professionals is on the rise. Building upon our existing expertise in this sector, Saint Joseph's University has created a School of Health Studies and Education, which will officially open in the Fall of 2019. Over 40 existing undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and certificate programs, including this one, will be housed in this school.
