This graduate degree isn't solely for secondary mathematics teachers. Our Master of Science in Secondary Mathematics Education can help you advance your career, no matter what that career is. The Secondary Math Education M.S. offers students the opportunity to complete a graduate degree emphasizing both mathematical content knowledge and mathematical pedagogical knowledge. Students are required to complete course work in both areas and have the option of incorporating a research experience. Designed for in-service teachers, the program aims to increase the mathematical knowledge needed for teaching at the secondary level and to support teachers’ growth as reflective practitioners.

Program Options

The M.S. in mathematics education offers two program options:

  • M.S. in Secondary Mathematics Education (without certification) – 30 credits
    This program, designed for in-service teachers, aims to increase the mathematical knowledge needed for teaching at the secondary level and to support teachers’ growth as reflective practitioners.
  • Five-Year Combined B.S. in Mathematics, M.S. in Mathematics Education (with certification)
    This program offers students the opportunity to complete an undergraduate major in mathematics, receive Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Secondary Teacher Certification in mathematics, and earn a M.S. in Secondary Mathematics Education.

The demand for quality education professionals is on the rise. Building upon our existing expertise in this sector, Saint Joseph's University has created a  School of Health Studies and Education , which will officially open in the Fall of 2019. Over 40 existing undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and certificate programs, including this one, will be housed in this school.
