Cardinal John Foley Celebrates Mass at SJU

Wednesday, January 23, 2008

Saint Joseph's University's esteemed alumnus and friend, His Eminence John Cardinal Foley '57, will celebrate a special Mass of Thanksgiving for the SJU community on Sunday, January 27, at 11:00 a.m., in the Chapel of Saint JosephMichael J. Smith, Memorial. All are welcome to attend.

Cardinal Foley was one of 23 new cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church named by Pope Benedict XVI in November, and is the first Saint Joseph's graduate to achieve this status. Ordained as a priest in 1962, Cardinal Foley was most recently named Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Knights and Ladies of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, after serving for more than 20 years as president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications.

In 1985, Cardinal Foley was awarded an honorary degree from the University, and the Saint Joseph's University Alumni Association recognized him with its highest honor, the Shield of Loyola, in 1997. He has returned to campus many times, one of the more recent to celebrate his Golden Hawks 50th graduation anniversary at the 2007 Commencement exercises.

"I am extremely honored to welcome Cardinal Foley back to Saint Joseph's University for this special visit," said University President Timothy R. Lannon, S.J. "We are truly blessed to have this rare opportunity to share in the Mass with this spiritually gifted leader of the Church."
