The Institute for Jewish-Catholic Relations will sponsor a panel discussion featuring two leading rabbis, Rabbi Mark Dratch and Rabbi Eugene Korn, Ph.D., on Thursday, Nov. 9, 7-8:30 pm. The panel will focus on their involvement in preparing two recent statements regarding the Jewish community’s relations with the Catholic Church from their Orthodox Jewish perspective. They will also discuss why they felt a need to compose these statements and what challenges they faced in doing so.
“For the first time, two Orthodox Jewish statements have been issued to discuss their understanding of the relationship of Judaism and the Jewish people to the Catholic Church,” says Philip A. Cunningham, Ph.D., professor of theology & religious studies and director of the IJCR.
Rabbi Mark Dratch from New York City is the executive vice president of the Rabbinical Council of America, and founder of JSafe: The Jewish Institute Supporting an Abuse Free Environment, an organization addressing issues of domestic violence, child abuse and institutional and professional improprieties in the Jewish community.
Rabbi Eugene Korn, Ph.D., from Jerusalem is a scholar in the areas of Jewish ethics, Jewish-Christian relations and Israel. He is also the academic director of the Center for Jewish-Christian Understanding and Cooperation in Israel and co-director of its Institute of Theological Inquiry.
“The Institute for Jewish-Catholic Relations has long brought leading thinkers to campus for diverse audiences,” says Adam Gregerman, Ph.D., assistant professor of theology and religious studies, who co-directs the IJCR with Cunningham. “These speakers have greatly contributed to a greater understanding and partnership between the Orthodox community and the Catholic Church.”
The event will be held in the Haub Executive Center in the Large Lapsley room and is free to attend. For more information, please contact the Institute for Jewish-Catholic Relations at firstname.lastname@example.org or 610-660-1863.
