In Memoriam: Bishop Joseph McFadden '69

Thursday, May 2, 2013

Saint Joseph's University mourns the passing of Bishop Joseph McFadden ’69, Bishop of Harrisburg, who died suddenly today, Thursday, May 2, 2013.

Bishop McFadden, a native Philadelphian, majored in political science at SJU and played on the freshman basketball team. Following his graduation, he was a teacher and basketball coach at West Catholic High School and in 1972 he was appointed the school’s athletic director and also served on the Philadelphia Catholic League’s board of directors.

In 1981, Bishop McFadden was ordained a priest after earning a master of divinity degree, summa cum laude from St. Charles Seminary that year.  In reflecting on his decision to become a priest, he said, in an article that appeared in SJU Magazine in 2010, that “caring for the Church has been a great joy.  There’s no more exciting or worth choice.  The Lord has called me to places I never thought I’d be.”

“Bishop McFadden was a faithful servant of the Lord and a beloved Hawk,” said C. Kevin Gillespie, S.J. ’72, president of Saint Joseph’s University. “He will be deeply missed in the campus and Catholic communities.”

The University community shares the sentiments expressed by Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap,, on the loss of Bishop McFadden.
