Thursday, February 25, 2016
Rev. Bruce M. Bidinger, S.J., director of the William F. Leahy Advising Center in the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, passed away February 23 at Lankenau Hospital after suffering with multiple health issues over the past several years.
Fr. Bidinger first came to Saint Joseph’s in 1996, working in Campus Ministry and later serving as SJU’s first vice president for mission and ministry. He was named president of St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in 2002 and remained in that role until 2006, becoming instrumental in a $30 million "Campaign for the Prep" that nearly doubled the physical plant of the school.
Fr. Bidinger returned to Hawk Hill following those successes and worked in the Development and Alumni Relations area before moving over to academic advising in 2011. He also returned to a popular post as chaplain for the Saint Joseph’s men’s basketball team, where his familiar smile and pre-game blessings were part of countless Hawk victories over the years.
"Fr. Bidinger's contributions to the Haub School of Business and to the entire University were innumerable. His passion for Jesuit education and leadership of the HSB advising center had a lasting impact on so many of our students," says Joseph A. DiAngelo, Ed.D. '70, dean of the Haub School of Business. "He loved our students. He will be greatly missed."
Previously Fr. Bidinger spent five years as principal of Scranton Prep, where he was also a chemistry teacher. Additionally, he taught science at St. Joseph’s Prep, Georgetown Prep and Loyola Blakefield in Maryland.
Family and friends of Fr. Bidinger are invited to attend the following services: Wakes will be held on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2 - 6 p.m. at Manresa Hall (261 City Ave., Merion Station), and Monday, Feb. 29, 9 - 10:45 a.m. at St. Matthias Church, (128 Bryn Mawr Ave., Bala Cynwyd). A funeral mass will be held on Monday, Feb. 29 at 11 a.m. at St. Matthias Church.
