"Our Destinies Are Tied Together"

Thursday, November 9, 2017

On Oct. 26, 2017, Saint Joseph’s University held a daylong commemoration for the 50th anniversary of a speech Martin Luther King Jr. delivered on the same date in 1967 in Saint Joseph’s Alumni Memorial Field House (now Hagan Arena). Titled “Our Destinies Are Tied Together” after a quote from the speech, the day’s events included faculty led teach-ins; a community reading of the speech; a panel discussion, “Where Do We Go from Here?”; a screening of the film “Blaxpolitalian”; and “The Clear Voice of Justice,” an exhibit of photographs and other artifacts from the 1967 event, displayed in the Gerald Manley Hopkins, S.J., Special Collections Rooms of Post Learning Commons throughout the fall semester.

In this video, several SJU community members involved with the reading reflect on the meaning and power of the speech.
