Public Safety Launches Customized Safety App

Monday, August 26, 2019

The start of the fall 2019 semester brings new safety resources to current students, faculty and staff on Hawk Hill. In addition to a new Service Center in Campion, the Office of Public Safety and Security is now offering a custom safety app - SJU Safe. The app went live in the App Store and Google Play in August.

“The safety of our campus is my utmost priority, and we are continually enriching our safety programs through operational and technological enhancements,” said Arthur Grover, director of public safety and security. “The app consolidates existing resources, like our emergency plan and campus map, and adds a number of new features including virtual walks, mobile BlueLight activations and push notifications for breaking safety alerts.”

SJU Safe allows users to request a virtual walk home, where public safety dispatchers can virtually monitor a person safely get to their destination by using the GPS tracking mechanism in most smartphones, while on campus. Users can also opt for a friend walk, which uses the same technology, but a friend monitors the walk instead of a dispatcher. Users are encouraged to sign in with their University credentials during download to access all available features.

The app functionality also includes a check-in feature for students who are studying abroad.

“While you are in the app store, don’t forget to also download SJU Mobile,” said Fran DiSanti, chief information officer, whose team was critical in the implementation of SJU Safe. “Students can access grades, class schedule, dining menus and the shuttle tracker.”
