Tuesday, September 3, 2013

Saint Joseph’s University will hold its second annual “Wellness Week” Sept. 16-20 creating a University-wide effort to raise awareness of physical, mental and spiritual wellness. The Wellness Week Committee, made up of members from a dozen departments across campus, anticipates University-wide participation by students, faculty and staff in the week-long series of events and activities.

“The Wellness, Alcohol & Drug Education (WADE) program already provides programming and support resources related to alcohol and drugs and we saw this as a way to extend our outreach on broader wellness issues,” says Katie Bean, assistant director of WADE and Student Outreach and Support. “Many other departments across campus share in wellness promotion, especially given our mission and focus on cura personalis.”

Week-long wellness events include free fitness classes at the O’Pake Fitness Center, programs on healthy eating, positive psychology, the benefits of running and sleeping well.

The main event of the week is the Wellness Fair on Tuesday, Sept. 17 on the second floor of the Campion Student Center. Bean says, “The Wellness Fair is an opportunity to promote all of the resources that already exist to help students, faculty, staff and alumni with their holistic health.”

Those who attend will receive a raffle ticket for prizes that include: a certificate for a free fitness evaluation and training session at Main Line Health; a free month of yoga classes at the Yoga Garden; and assorted gift baskets donated by various departments on campus.
