SJU Celebrates Annual Ignatian Week

The Saint Joseph's University community is celebrating Ignatian Week from Oct. 28 - Nov. 3 with events for students, faculty and staff to reflect on the Jesuit and Catholic ideals of the University.

"This year's Ignatian Week will be devoted to a conversation on race and diversity at SJU," said Frank Morris, Ph.D., executive director of the Office of Mission. "We are hoping to build on the progress made recently in advancing greater awareness of how central these matters are to the carrying out of the mission of this University."

Ignatian Week kicked off with an evening mass celebrated by Rev. Steve Thorne, an archdiocesan priest, on Sunday, Oct. 28, in the Michael J. Smith, S.J., Memorial Chapel.

Remaining events for the week are as follows:

Tuesday, Oct. 30

11:30 a.m.: Martin Luther King, Jr. and Catholic Social Teaching Bryan Massingale, S.T.D., Professor of theology at Marquette University, will present a lecture on Martin Luther King, Jr., and Catholic Social Teaching in the Wolfington Teletorium in Mandeville Hall. Gerald Beyer, Ph.D., associate professor of theology, and Robert Moore, Ph.D., associate professor of sociology, will be respondents.

Tuesday, Oct. 30

7 p.m.: Movie and Discussion Students and faculty are invited to the Forum Theater in Campion Student Center for a screening of the Academy Award-winning picture Crash, followed by a post-screening discussion moderated by Rick Malloy, S.J., assistant professor of sociology.

Thursday, Nov. 1

11:30 a.m.: Taking the Pulse: Race & Diversity at SJU Faculty and students are invited to "Taking the Pulse: Race & Diversity at SJU," a presentation by Rick Malloy, S.J., assistant professor of sociology, Office of Campus Ministry; Deirdre Guion, Ph.D., assistant professor of marketing; Valerie Dudley, Ph.D., director of Institutional Diversity; and Jillian Romero of the University Student Senate. The event will take place in the North Lounge of the Campion Student Center.

Faculty, students and staff will continue discussion over lunch.

Thursday, Nov. 1

7 p.m.: Meet the Jesuits Students are invited to meet and converse with SJU's Jesuit community over pizza in the Carriage House at the Loyola Center.
