Saint Joseph’s University will host the Kinney Center for Autism Education and Support’s annual Run/Walk for Autism on Saturday, September 23, at 8:30 a.m. The event is part of HawkFest, SJU’s reunion/family weekend, which a daylong slate of events for alumni, students, parents and families. The races begin outside of the Cardinal John  P. Foley ’57 Campus Center on the James J. Maguire ’58 Campus. The event will be held rain or shine.

Race proceeds will support the Kinney SCHOLARS program. SCHOLARS are SJU undergraduates who work one-on-one with individuals with autism (ages 2-70 ) at the Kinney Center. Kinney SCHOLARS get hands-on experience by planning and giving lessons, monitoring progress and recording and studying data. Many go on to pursue careers in the field. Today, 150 undergraduates in the program support 800 families.

“The Kinney 5-K is a great opportunity to bring students, alumni, parents, and families affected by autism together and to show support for the center,” says the Kinney Center’s Executive Director Ryan Hammond ’13 (MBA). “Each year, the center staff looks forward to HawkFest and welcoming the 5-K participants to campus and its environs. We appreciate the generosity of all the runners and walkers, which has a deep impact on families affected by autism. Their support provides scholarships for programs and training for SCHOLARS, who interact with and care for individuals with autism daily."

Over 1,0000 people, including University President Mark C. Reed, Ed.D., and more than 50 teams, which include members of the SJU women's basketball, club running, and men's basketball, lacrosse, rowing and water polo teams, will be  running or walking to raise money to support services for children and adults with autism. Many have also volunteered to support the cause on race day.

Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. All registrants receive a T-shirt and are invited to attend a post-race party. For additional information, visit
