Saint Joseph’s University’s chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS), the International Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science Fraternity, was recognized for its achievements at the 45th Annual International GIS Conference held in Columbus, Ohio, September 29 – October 1.

This year is the first time Saint Joseph’s has been named in all five international chapter award categories. Of the 57 university and college chapters that attended the conference, comprising over 500 student members, the SJU chapter was recognized for its accomplishments in Alumni Relations, Public Relations, Chapter Management, Community Service and Member Development.

"We've done a lot to grow the insurance curriculum at Saint Joseph’s and to engage with the industry, and we have been recognized for those accomplishments,” says Michael E. Angelina, faculty advisor of GIS and director of the Academy of Risk Management and Insurance at SJU. “Now we're also being recognized for our students' achievements, which is wonderful.”

Representing the chapter at the conference were president Nicholas D’Orazio ’17 and members Thomas Murphy ’18, Caroline Nash ’17, Kevin O’Donnell ’17, Meg Rogers ’18, Samantha String ’19 and Grace Weldon ’19.

“This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our members, executive board and advisor. It is also necessary to commend Joseph Quartucio ’16 for his leadership as president of Gamma Iota Sigma in the 2015-2016 school year,” says D’Orazio. “This semester, we have experienced unprecedented attendance and participation at our events and aim to continue to grow our presence on campus.”

The chapter’s awards follow national recognition of the University’s risk management and insurance program. U.S. News & World Report’s 2017 “best undergraduate business programs” ranked Saint Joseph’s as No. 1 for risk management and insurance.
