Finding Support During a Personal Emergency
When a Personal Emergency Happens: Finding Support
At Saint Joseph’s University, we believe in cura personalis (care for the whole person.) When an emergency or significant life event affects your ability to attend class, keep up with coursework, or manage daily responsibilities, you do not have to navigate it alone.
Emergencies and significant life events can include a wide variety of experiences, including a serious health related issue, the death of a loved one, an arrest, eviction, or other unexpected challenges. While these situations can affect anyone, students experiencing financial hardship or navigating circumstances involving mixed-status families may face additional challenges.
Where Do I Start?
If you are experiencing an emergency or significant life challenge, contact the Office of Student Support & Well-being. We can listen, help you explore your options, and connect you with University and community resources based on your individual needs.
Every situation is different, and available support will depend on your circumstances. You do not need to have all the answers before reaching out. We can help you identify next steps and understand the resources available to you.

How Can We Help?
Depending on your circumstances, we can help you:
- Communicate with your professors. With your permission, our office can notify your professors that you are experiencing a significant emergency or life circumstance that may affect your attendance or academic performance. The notification will not disclose the details of your situation. Please note that a notification does not automatically excuse absences, extend deadlines, or guarantee academic accommodations. Professors determine any adjustments in accordance with course policies and University guidelines.
- Explore enrollment options. If your circumstances make it difficult to continue your studies, we can help you understand the process for requesting a Temporary Separation from the University.
- Navigate financial concerns. Emergencies, including family emergencies can create unexpected financial challenges. We can connect you with the appropriate University offices to discuss questions about your student account, financial aid, tuition, refunds, or other financial matters.
- Connect with emotional and mental health support. If you are experiencing stress, grief, anxiety, or other emotional challenges, we can connect you with SJU’s Office of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and other support resources.
- Access academic support. We can help you connect with your academic advisor to discuss your courses, academic progress, options for completing coursework, and plans for returning to the University if you need to take time away.
- Identify additional resources. Depending on your needs, we can help you explore other University and community resources that may provide support during a difficult time.
You Don't Have to Navigate This Alone
You do not need to know what kind of help you need before reaching out. If something you are experiencing is making it difficult to manage your time here at SJU, we encourage you to connect with us.
Start by reaching out. We will listen, help you understand your options, and connect you with the people and resources that can help you move forward.
