Join us for a week full of activities at the Maguire Art Museum celebrating Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)!
From October 27 – November 1, visit the museum’s Great Hall to create artworks and decorations for our ofrenda. Learn about the meaning and history behind traditions like papel picado, retablos, marigolds, and mosaics while you make your own and explore the Latin American collections!
On Wednesday, October 29th, come for an educational talk with Chicana artist Marta Sanchez, and visit again on Friday, October 31 for our community ofrenda build.
On Saturday, November 1, join us for a day of celebration with refreshments, a musical dance performance, and to cherish and honor the memory of loved ones through art. See below for the full schedule of activities.

DIY crafts - ongoing
Stop by during the week to create decorations and artworks for the ofrenda! Learn how to make papel picado and decorative marigolds, design a bean mosaic, and create your own retablo honoring a loved one. Museum staff will be present to professionally print a photo of your loved one, as well as to guide you through your craft and tell you more about these objects.

Talk with artist Marta Sanchez
Visit the museum for a lively and educational talk with artist Marta Sanchez as she explains the meaning and history behind Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) traditions, and speaks about her own artistic process and experience.
Friday, October 31st

Ofrenda build with artist Marta Sanchez
Observe, create, and learn as we build the ofrenda with artist Marta Sanchez in the Mexican Art Gallery.
Saturday, November 1st
11 AM – 2 PM
Día de los Muertos / Day of the Dead Family Day
Celebrate Day of the Dead at the Maguire Art Museum! Create crafts like papel picado, marigolds, retablos, and bean mosaics; enjoy conchas and Mexican hot chocolate; and experience a folklorico dance performance by Philadelphia group Ñuuxakun!
Don't forget to explore the collections and see the ofrenda!
Free and open to the public! All ages welcome.
Please note that the museum is only accessible from Lapsley Ln via City Ave. The museum is not accessible from Latches Ln.
Family Days at the Maguire Art Museum
Get creative with us on Family Day! Our family days are typically held on Saturdays from 12-3 pm. They are free and open to the public! We have themed activities that are suitable for all ages. Visitors can also enjoy access to the 12-acre Barnes Arboretum.
