FAQs for Student Tax Information
Federal Regulations require students to provide their SSN or TIN for federal reporting. The requirement applies to any student regardless of whether or not the student will seek the American opportunity tax credit or Lifetime Learning Credit.
It is the student’s responsibility to ensure your information is accurate by December 31.
Pursuant to privacy laws and regulations, the U.S. Tax Identification Number is only used for reporting purposes as required and will not be used as an identifier in any Saint Joseph’s University student records system.
If we are sending you a letter via email or USPS, we do not have your SSN on file.
If we do not have your Social Security Number on file, we are required by the IRS to solicit the information from the student.
If we do not have your social security or we have incorrect information, this could result in fines imposed to the student by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), regardless of whether the student is intending to seek the tax credit.
The 1098-T is a statement provided by Saint Joseph’s University to eligible students who paid qualifying educational expenses during the calendar year. The 1098-T may be used to claim the American opportunity tax credit or Lifetime Learning Credit on their federal income tax returns.
Saint Joseph’s University is required to file a 1098-T with the IRS.
All eligible students will be notified by email no later than January 31 that the form is available on The Nest. To view your 1098-T, go to the Tuition and Aid tab, under Payment Options and Information, Tax Forms, “Access your 1098-T Form”. You will then need to login to Self Service.
