Overview

Together, the F.A. Drexel Library and Post Learning Commons at Hawk Hill, the Griffith Library in University City, and the Greenfield Library in Lancaster comprise the Saint Joseph’s University Libraries. The Hawk Hill campus library is between the Barbelin building and the Science Center. The University City library is located in Griffith Hall, Suite 208 at 43rd Street and Woodland Avenue in the University City section of Philadelphia.  The Greenfield Library is located at 850 Greenfield Road in Lancaster, PA.

The Libraries support the academic programs of Saint Joseph’s University with books and periodicals in both print and electronic formats, research databases, audio-visual materials, and microforms. In addition, the Libraries provides circulating collections of popular reading and audiobooks. The Saint Joseph’s University Archives is housed in the F.A. Drexel Library. 

Mission Statement

The mission of the Saint Joseph’s University Libraries is to promote lifelong learning, academic integrity, and the best possible student and faculty scholarship. The Libraries seek to provide convenient access for its users to relevant, high quality information sources and collections. In collaboration with faculty, the Libraries support and enhance curricular programs and offer instruction in the skilled use and understanding of information. The Libraries strive to create environments conducive to quiet study, purposeful research and thoughtful exchange of ideas.

  • The Post Learning Commons and Drexel Library are connected by a glass atrium, and together, comprise the Post Academic Center on the Hawk Hill Campus.

    DRIVING DIRECTIONS FOR COMMON ROUTES

    From the North: New Jersey Turnpike to Exit 6 (PA Turnpike
    connector). Follow PA Turnpike to Rte.476 (Old Exit 25A/New Exit 20). Follow 476 South to Rte. 76 East, toward
    Philadelphia. Follow Rte. 76 East to Exit 339 (Rte. 1,
    City Avenue). Follow two miles to SJU.

    From the East:From the Ben Franklin Bridge (via Rte. 676) or the
    Walt Whitman Bridge: Follow Rte. 76 West to Exit
    339 (Rte. 1, City Avenue). Follow two miles to SJU.

    From the South:
    Interstate 95 North to 476 North. Follow 476 North
    to Exit 5 (Rte. 1). Follow Rte. 1 North to SJU
    approximately 10 miles.

    From the West:PA Turnpike to Old Exit 24/New Exit 326 (Valley Forge). Follow Rte. 76 East, toward Philadelphia, to Exit 339 (Rte. 1, City
    Avenue). Follow two miles to SJU.

    From the Airport:
    Interstate 95 North to Rte. 76 West. Follow Rte. 76
    West to Exit 339 (Rte. 1, City Avenue). Follow two
    miles to SJU.

    From 30th Street Amtrak Station:Rte. 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) westbound to Exit
    339 (Rte. 1, City Avenue). Follow two miles to SJU.

    BY TRAIN OR BUS

    Use SEPTA's trip planner to find the most convenient route to campus from the historic Amtrak/30th Street Station or any spot along SEPTA's varied routes. The 65, 44, 1, 52 and G buses have stops on campus, and SEPTA Regional Rail (Paoli/Thorndale line) stops at Overbrook Station, less than a mile from the center of campus.

    PARKING

    Visitors and those persons who conduct business with the University will be directed to park in the Hawks' Landing Parking Facility.

  • The University City library space is now located in Griffith Hall, Suite 208, on August 23. Griffith 208 is a large collection of rooms and areas that will be fully outfitted as a quest study space for students. This will be where course reserves and other academic texts and resources (like anatomy models) will be available. On Sept. 30, we will reassess the situation to determine if the England Library can be reopened as an additional quiet study space for the remainder of the academic year. Griffith Hall is located at 43rd Street and Woodland Avenue in the University City section of Philadelphia. Limited street parking is available. Trolleys #11 and #36 stop at the Library's corner.

    DRIVING DIRECTIONS FOR COMMON ROUTES

    From the North:
    Take the Pennsylvania Turnpike to Exit 20 Mid-County. Merge onto I-476 South. Merge onto I-76 East. Exit I-76 at Exit 346B–University Ave. Keep right at the fork in the ramp, merging onto University Ave. At the fourth traffic light, make a left onto Baltimore Ave. Merge left onto Woodland Ave. Make a left onto 42nd St. and follow around to parking area on right.

    From the West:
    Take the Pennsylvania Turnpike to Exit 326 Valley Forge Interchange. Merge onto I-76 East. Exit I-76 at Exit 346B–University Ave. Keep right at the fork in the ramp, merging onto University Ave. At the fourth traffic light, make a left onto Baltimore Ave. Merge left onto Woodland Ave. Make a left onto 42nd St. and follow around to parking area on right.

    From the South:
    Take I-95 North. Merge onto I-76 West/Central Philadelphia. Exit I-76 at Exit 346B-University Ave. At the eighth traffic light, turn left onto Baltimore Ave. Merge left onto Woodland Ave. Make a left onto 42nd St. and follow around to parking area on right.

    Via I-95 from the North or East:
    Take I-95 South to I-676 West/Central Philadelphia. Merge onto I-76 East. Exit I-76 at Exit 346B–University Ave. Keep right at the fork in the ramp, merging onto University Ave. At the fourth traffic light, make a left onto Baltimore Ave. Merge left onto Woodland Ave. Make a left onto 42nd St. and follow around to parking area on right.

    From the New Jersey Turnpike: 
    Take the New Jersey Turnpike to Exit 3. Follow signs for Philadelphia via the Walt Whitman Bridge. Merge onto I-76 West. Exit I-76 at Exit 346B–University Ave. At the eighth traffic light, turn left onto Baltimore Ave. Merge left onto Woodland Ave. Make a left onto 42nd St. and follow around to parking area on right.

    BY TRAIN OR BUS

    From anywhere via AMTRAK:
    Visit amtrak.com for routes and schedules. Arrive at Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station. Taxi to the University is approximately $15. Or board the westbound SEPTA trolley (green line) #36 or #11 to Woodland Ave. and 43rd St. 

    From Philadephia International Airport via SEPTA:
    Visit septa.org for routes and schedules. Take SEPTA Airport Rail Line to Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station. Then board the westbound SEPTA trolley (green line) #36 or #11 to Woodland Ave. and 43rd St. 

    From Philadelphia International Airport via Taxi:
    Approximate fare to our University City location is $30.

    From Southern New Jersey via PATCO High Speed Line:
    Visit ridepatco.org for routes and schedules. Arrive at 8th and Market Street Station. Then board the westbound Market Frankford Elevated Line (blue line) to 30th Street Station. Take the westbound trolley (green line) #36 or #11 to Woodland Ave. and 43rd St.

    From throughout Pennsylvania's Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties:
    Visit septa.org for regional rail and bus routes and schedules.

    PARKING

    Visitor parking is located in front of or behind the Athletic/Recreation Center. 

  • The Greenfield Library is located in the Cooper Building in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

    From the Reading area:
    Take 422-W to 222-S. Merge onto 30-E. Take the Greenfield Road exit and merge onto Greenfield Road. Travel down Greenfield Road until you reach Saint Joseph's University in Lancaster, 850 Greenfield Road, on the left.

    From the Philadelphia area:
    Take I-76 W to exit 286 to 222-S. Merge onto 30-E. Take the Greenfield Road exit and merge onto Greenfield Road. Travel down Greenfield Road until you reach the Saint Joseph's University in Lancaster, 850 Greenfield Road, on the left.

    From the York area or west of Lancaster:

  • The Libraries are committed to serving all members of the Saint Joseph’s University community.

    The main entrance, elevators, and restrooms in the Post Academic Center are wheelchair accessible. Elevator access is available to each level of the Post Learning Commons and Drexel Library.

    If you have questions about access to either campus library or its collections and amenities, please call the Service Desk at 610-660-1900 (Hawk Hill campus) or 215-596-8960 (University City location).

Policies

  • All Saint Joseph’s University constituents are issued a Saint Joseph’s University photo identification card in order to permit building access to the libraries.

    Saint Joseph’s University constituents without a current SJU identification card may be denied admission to campus libraries. If their card has been lost or stolen, they will be expected replace their card before they return to campus libraries.

    Alumni Access

    Alumni of Saint Joseph’s University are welcome to use SJU’s Library Catalog (limit search results to "Available in Library" and borrow books from campus libraries with a valid alumni card. This card may be requested at a Library Service Desk. Use of databases and general Internet access is restricted to current students, faculty, and staff members with valid network accounts and passwords. Suggestions for alternative access to electronics resources are available in our Resources for Alumni Research Guide.

    Saint Joseph’s University alumni will be granted access to library buildings during Visitor Hours (see below) and may obtain a Library card in order to borrow books. This card is obtained at a Library Service Desk. (See Policy on Alumni, above)

    Visitor Access

    Visitors are defined as persons who do not have a currently valid SJU ID.

    • All adult visitors must show a valid photo ID to enter.
    • Visitors must wear a dated Visitor badge lanyard that is visible at all times.
    • You may leave and re-enter only if your badge lanyard is visible.
    • If you do not have your badge lanyard, you will be asked to present your ID to be signed into our system again. No exceptions.
    • All minors must be accompanied by an adult to enter campus libraries. No exceptions.
    • Visitors may not reserve study rooms.
    • Visitors are not allowed to use the libraries during finals.

    Griffith Library (University City) and Greenfield Library (Lancaster) Visitor Hours: 

    Alumni, Scholars, and Researchers please reach out to SJU Libraries via Ask a Librarian to schedule your visit to the library.

    Exceptions to these hours occur during holidays, summer hours, or finals periods.

    Use of Library computers, online databases and the SJU wifi network is restricted to members of the Saint Joseph's University community--currently registered students, faculty, and staff.  Visitors may use the Guest wifi network.  Visitors interested in borrowing books must initiate an interlibrary loan request from their own institution or public library.

  • To borrow library material, all Saint Joseph’s University faculty, students, and staff must present a valid Saint Joseph’s University identification card. Alumni may obtain a library identification card at an SJU Library Service Desk.

  • Please help us keep our collection, computers, and study rooms clean. Covered beverages and snacks are permitted. Meals are only permitted in the Cafe. Dispose of all trash in appropriate containers. Thank you for your help.

  • Use Policy for Group Study Rooms (Hawk Hill)

    • Rooms are for groups of 2 or more students
    • Rooms can be reserved for a maximum of 2 hours
    • Rooms can be reserved up to two weeks in advance.
    • Students cannot set up a standing appointment that meets regularly in the room.
    • Students can have up to 3 room reservations per week
    • Students may not make back-to-back reservations on the same day for the same room.
    • Please dispose of or remove any trash as you leave the room.
    • Please return whiteboard markers and erasers to the front desk as well as any special equipment checked out for use in the rooms.
    • Visitors may not reserve study rooms.
  • The library no longer lends laptops.  Please refer to this IT knowledge base article to review the loaner laptop policy and access the request form.

    • The SJU Libraries seek to ensure broad and timely access to academic resources across curricular areas, informed by the university’s strategic goals.
    • Liaison Librarians collaboratively build collections based on teaching and learning needs.
    • Acquisition considerations include diversity of authorship, opinion, and viewpoint; acceptable licensing terms, accessibility, and use.
    • The SJU Libraries participate in cooperative initiatives to reduce costs, improve licensing terms, and encourage use of open educational resources.
    • Campus libraries are not currently accepting donations of books or other physical items.
    • SJU Libraries welcomes monetary gifts for the purchase of high quality research materials, repair and maintenance of physical collections, and housing and conservation of archival and special collections materials.
    • SJU Libraries does not value gifts for tax purposes.
    • We recommend BetterWorldBooks for book donations including large collections.
  • SJU Libraries is committed to protecting the privacy of our patrons. In some areas of this site, you will be asked to provide personal information (name, email address, etc.) that will allow us to perform patron services. Your participation is completely optional. SJU Libraries does not rent, sell or otherwise make available e-mail addresses to anyone outside the University except those necessary parties involved in fulfilling a patron service, such as Interlibrary Loan.
