VisionarIE: Our Lens, Our Story
A storytelling photographic exhibition, Visionarie: Our Lens, Our Story.
This upcoming show features the talents of young artists who have participated in the Philadelphia nonprofit, Ordinarie Heroes youth photography program, their instructors, and the faculty in the Saint Joseph's University Art and Art History Department.
"Through the lens of their cameras, these extraordinary young people have captured their unique stories and perspectives that offer profound insights into their lives and the world around them. We invite the community to join us in supporting and celebrating their achievements", Ron Toles, Founder and Executive Director of Ordinarie Heroes.
Ordinarie Heroes, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering youth in Philadelphia offers a two-year comprehensive photography program designed to empower youth through the art of photography, fostering self-expression, social awareness, and personal growth. The first year of the program aims to provide participants with a strong foundation in digital photography while the second year focuses on expanding their knowledge to address social issues through photography. This exhibition is a culmination of the students' first year exploration into methods of storytelling through pictures.
The partnership with Ordinarie Heroes, the Maguire Art Museum, and faculty members from the Saint Joseph's University Art and Art History Department, gives a platform for youth voices to inspire critical thinking and dialogue. Krista Svalbonas, SJU Art and Art History Department Faculty and Jeanne Bracy, Associate Director of the Maguire Art Museum are curating the show together.
The exhibit will be on display at the MAM in 3 galleries from Aug. 17 to Sept. 23, 2023. A reception celebrating this exhibit and its participants will be held on Sept. 8 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the MAM. Register here to attend.
