Saint Joseph's University honors Michael E. Angelina, Executive in Residence of the Maguire Academy of Insurance and Risk Management at Saint Joseph's University, with the Haub School of Business Maguire Academy of Insurance and Risk Management Executive of the Year Award.
Mr. Angelina currently serves as an Executive in Residence of the Maguire Academy of Insurance and Risk Management at Saint Joseph's University. He previously served for nine years as the Executive Director of the Maguire Academy where he led the Risk Management and Insurance undergraduate program. Mike was instrumental in bringing the Maguire Academy to its industry leading reputation, with hundreds of students who have benefitted from his 35-plus years of industry experience in the classroom. Mike also developed the SJU Spencer – RIMS challenge team into a perennial finalist over a five-year period with three 1st place in four years.
Mike serves as a member of the board of directors of four insurance entities including RLI Corp, Equator Re (a Bermuda domiciled reinsurance subsidiary of global insurer, QBE), and CoAction (ProSight) Specialty Insurance Group. Mike is also Chairman of the Board of collector car specialist, Hagerty Inc. Mike served on the executive committee of the American Academy of Actuaries from October 2012 to October 2014 as the leader of the Casualty Practice Council, and then served a three-year term as a member of the Board of Directors.
Prior to joining the Maguire Academy in 2012, Mike was an executive officer with Bermuda-based insurer, Endurance Specialty Holdings, Ltd., serving as its Chief Risk Officer & Chief Actuary where he led their global pricing, reserving, and risk management functions with a particular emphasis on Enterprise Risk Management. During Mike’s tenure as Chief Risk Officer, Endurance was one of only four North American insurers to receive Standard & Poor’s highest rating of excellent for Enterprise Risk Management. Having spent over 16 years with Tillinghast (now WTW), he has extensive actuarial involvement in financial reporting, pricing, reserving, risk management and valuation. Additionally, he is a co-author of Tillinghast's industry-wide asbestos actuarial study released in 2001 and participated in the development of the 2003 FAIR Act (proposed industry-wide Federal asbestos legislation) representing both the insurance industry and the corporate asbestos defendants. Mike also served as an expert for a variety of asbestos bankruptcy proceedings including the Johns Manville Trust where he represented the future claimants committee. Mike also serves as an expert witness on many insurance matters in the insurance space.
In 2014, Mike was named as one of Insurance Business America’s Hot 100 Insurance Professionals because of his work on the topic of gender diversity in the insurance industry. In 2019, Mike received The Franklin Award, an annual award presented by the Philadelphia CPCU Society Chapter, for those individuals who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and contribution to the insurance industry in the Delaware Valley. Mike has also met with members of congress and their staff on asbestos issues, the National Flood Insurance Program, Terrorism, and other insurance issues. As the leader of the American Academy of Actuaries’ Casualty Practice Council, Mike has issued many comment letters to state, national, and global regulators on property casualty insurance issues including capital standards, catastrophe requirements, financial reporting, loss reserves, ratemaking, and qualification standards for actuaries.
