Descriptions for all Campus Ministry and Office of Mission programs can be accessed by clicking on the links below. These program descriptions may change from time to time. Students should carefully read the program descriptions prior to registering or applying for a program.

Once a student has registered for or has been accepted to their chosen program, they must also sign a legal agreement, the Program Agreement, which includes a media release, medical release, assumption of risk, waiver, and release of liability, and indemnity. The Program Agreement includes a link back to this page. Prior to signing the Program Agreement, students must re-read their chosen program description by clicking on the link below.

    Appalachian Experience (APEX)

    Program Description:
    The Appalachian Experience (APEX) offers students an experience of community, serving with other and for others, while learning about the culture and concerns of the people of the Appalachian region. During the spring break immersion experience, students will learn, serve, and grow in relationship with the communities in Appalachia. 

    Program Location(s):

    Transportation to Location(s):
    Ground transportation in SJU-owned vans and vans rented from Enterprise.

    Description of Activities and Related Requirement:
    During the spring break immersion trip, students will take part in various physical service projects that may include, but are not limited to: light construction, cleaning, painting, lifting, climbing ladders, and using hammers, saws, or power tools. Work may be indoors or outdoors. Other service projects will include personal interaction with members of the community we are visiting.  Hiking and other outdoor recreation may also be a part of some trips. Wheelchair accessibility is not guaranteed at all sites.

    Hotel or Housing Accommodations:
    Varies per site as accommodations will be provided by the host organization. Churches, gymnasiums, camp facilities, retreat centers etc. are utilized, each requiring participants to bring sleeping bags or blankets.  No hotels. Packing lists are provided to participants prior to departure.

    Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice

    Program Description:
    The Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice is an opportunity to learn, pray, and advocate for justice at the largest annual Catholic social justice gathering in the United States.

    Students and staff will drive in SJU vehicles.

    Philadelphia Service Immersion Program 2.0 (PSIP 2.0)

    Program Description:
    PSIP 2.0 is an early move-in opportunity specifically for sophomores, juniors and seniors. Students will participate in community service at a community partner site in Philadelphia during the day. In the late afternoon and evening, students will explore different historical and cultural destinations in the Philadelphia area. Students will also spend time on campus reflecting on their service experiences while also fostering a community amongst their peers.

    Program Location(s):
    In small groups, students will serve at various community partners throughout the city of Philadelphia. During the late afternoon, the student groups will join SJU alumni to visit a Philadelphia historical or cultural destination. The service sites and historical/ cultural destinations may include, but are not limited to:

    Student volunteer activities vary depending on site location and may include, but are not limited to: organizing, moving items, interacting with community members, bagging food for a food bank, preparing meals, cleaning, painting, gardening/ outdoor work.

    In addition to service, students can expect to visit a Philly destination as listed above. This can include extended times outdoors, hiking, walking, and there may be facility limitations such as non-wheel-chair accessible.

    Hotel or Housing Accommodations:
    During the program, students will stay in their own on-campus or off-campus homes. Housing accommodations are not provided.

    Program Description:

    Rome Pilgrimage 2024

    Program Description:
    The Fall 2024 Immersion Experience in Rome

    Students from SJU will journey with other college students from Philadelphia, as well as from around the country, to Rome from October 11th through 19th, 2024 in order to witness the final General Assembly of Bishops where two of their peers (Oseka and another U.S. college student) are among the 363 global delegates who will make recommendations to Pope Francis for ways we might renew the Church in order to better serve its mission. Highlights of this week-long experience will include:
     

    • Information and formation through a “Teach in on Synodality” designed by educators from participating delegations from across the US
    • Encounters with synod delegates, Church leaders, and charism leaders (i.e., Jesuit, Mercy, Vincentian) in order to witness to the hopes and dreams of young adults
    • Participation in public facing events related to the General Assembly - prayer services, walking rosaries, lectures, public audiences of Pope Francis, etc.
    • Access to the General Assembly of Bishops in the Paul VI Hall during one of the public discernment sessions 
    • Fellowship with more than 100 students from more than 10 delegations from Catholic institutions of higher education in the U.S.
    • Formation in the spiritual practices of synodality--encounter, listening, dialogue, and communal discernment
    • Training in methods of conversation in the Spirit, which can be integrated into campus communities upon return

    Transportation to Location(s):
    Flights booked through Concur (Direct Travel). Local transportation in Rome. 

    Description of Activities and Related Requirements:
    Extended time sitting or standing while participating in public facing events including prayer services, walking rosaries, lectures, public audiences of Pope Francis etc.

    In addition, students can expect to visit other culturally relevant destinations in Italy. This can include extended times outdoors, walking, and there may be facility limitations such as non-wheel-chair accessible.

    Hotel or Housing Accommodations:
    Will be booking local accommodations in Rome through Monastery Stays

    Campus Ministry Rules/Requirements:

    In addition to the Community Standards, the following Campus Ministry Rules/Requirements apply:

    • No illegal drug possession or use; no alcohol possession or use, even if age 21 or over). Exceptions apply for a group dinner with an Italian host. In this case one drink is permitted. 
    • Students cannot travel or participate in the immersion if they test positive for COVID-19
    • Students should go in pairs or groups while traveling in Rome. Students should not be walking by themselves.

    Weekly Service

    Program Description:
    SJU Weekly Service is a relationship-based service program grounded in our Catholic, Jesuit tradition and welcoming of all students. We seek to provide students with an opportunity to experience the realities of our neighbors in the Philadelphia and Camden communities, reflect on their unique calling as agents of change, and develop a lifelong passion of working for justice.

    Program Location(s):
    Weekly Service placement locations are located in the greater Philadelphia and Camden communities. A complete listing of service placements are on the Weekly Service website. 

    Transportation to Location(s):
    SJU students will have the option of the following transportation options: (1) drive or ride in SJU vehicles (2) drive or ride in a student’s personal vehicle (3) utilize public transportation to service, or (4) walk to their service placement if applicable. 

    Description of Activities and Related Requirements:
    Student volunteer activities vary depending on site location and may include but are not limited to: tutoring/mentoring youth; visiting with seniors in nursing homes; facilitating activities with adults or youth with disabilities; serving food at a soup kitchen or organizing food donations at a food bank; or running with individuals who are transitioning out of homelessness.

    • Cell phones should be put away during service (with the exception of the group leader who can keep their cell phone on hand in case of any emergencies).

    • COVID vaccines are mandatory for some placements (which are specified in the site descriptions) 
    • Students must watch an information video before applying if they are a new volunteer. Students must attend both a general orientation and a site specific orientation.
    • Students volunteering with youth must complete background check clearances. 
    • Students must travel or walk to service with at least one other student.

    Program Description:
    The Winter Immersion Program (WIP) invites students to live out a 'faith that does justice' by encountering God’s love in the friendships and relationships made in community, and living out human centered solidarity upon return. WIP is not just a week-long experience. Students will engage in a preparation, immersion, and integration process as a community. WIP explores the intersection of faith and justice and dives deeply into themes such as: Ignatian Social Justice, Catholic Social Teaching, liberation, and context of the WIP sites, which will vary depending on the community they will be immersed in.

    • San Salvador, El Salvador 

    Transportation to Location(s):

    • SJU vans to the airport

    • Ground transportation (including but not limited to vans or private buses once on site) 

    Description of Activities and Related Requirements:
    It varies per site. Our immersions are focused on encounter and building relationships. However, there is a lot of walking and standing. In the homestays in El Salvador are in a rural mountainous area.

    • El Paso – bunk beds located in a church 
    • SanSalvador – depending on the group size, hotel or homestay

Retreats

    Program Description:
    A 24-hour retreat for students involved in SJU’s Chapel Choir and Band to relax, pray, have fun, sing/play music, and learn about one another on a deeper level.

    Program Location(s):
    St. Raphaela Retreat Center - Haverford, PA

    Transportation to Location(s):
    Students usually carpool to and from the retreat, with upperclass students driving others.  If needed, SJU vans are used.

    Description of Activities and Related Requirements:
    Community builders, student-led talks, small group discussions, music rehearsals, morning and evening prayer,

    Discover Retreat

    Program Description:
    The Discover retreat is for juniors and seniors who have already made the Search retreat.  It offers an opportunity to revisit and deepen many of the experiences from Search, with a focus on discerning where God is calling you in your life today.

    Transportation to Location(s):
    Students drive themselves to the Saint Raphaela Center in carpools in their own vehicles.

    Description of Activities and Related Requirements:
    Most of the activities on the retreat take place indoors, and involve sitting while listening to talks by other students or meeting with each other in small groups.  Some brief activities will be outdoors and involve light amounts of physical activity such as stretching, running, and jumping.

    Hotel or Housing Accommodations:
    The Saint Raphaela Center provides housing for students and staff in a combination of single, double, or triple accommodations.

    Campus Ministry Rules/Requirements:
    In addition to the Community Standards, the following Campus Ministry Rules/Requirements apply:

    Students are asked to minimize their use of cell phones, to keep any information that other students share confidential (except in the cases of mandatory reporting and students who may be a danger to themselves or others).  Students are asked not to use alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs, and to refrain physical intimacy while at the Saint Raphaela Center.

    Program Description:
    Ignite is a weekend retreat for first-year students designed to help them continue their spiritual growth at SJU.  It is centered around the idea of understanding themselves as beloved sons and daughters of God, and reflecting on that idea through a series of talks by their fellow students, and small group discussions.

    Saint Raphaela Center, 616 Coopertown Road, Haverford, PA 19041

    Transportation to Location(s):
    Participants travel to and from the Saint Raphaela Center in a school bus chartered from First Student Inc.  Some student leaders also travel on the bus, while others drive either their own vehicle or a university vehicle, depending on the program’s needs.

    Description of Activities and Related Requirements:
    Most of the activities on the retreat take place indoors, and involve sitting while listening to talks by other students or meeting with each other in small groups.  Some brief activities will be outdoors and involve light amounts of physical activity such as stretching, running, and jumping.  Students briefly gather around an outdoor firepit.

    Hotel or Housing Accommodations:
    The Saint Raphaela Center provides housing for students and staff in a combination of single, double, or triple accommodations.

    Search Retreat

    Program Description:
    Search is a weekend retreat for sophomores, juniors, and seniors.  The experience is one of renewal and reflection, with time to think, walk, pray, create, communicate, connect, laugh and rest.  It is a weekend of personal and spiritual exploration.

    Program Location(s):
    Saint Raphaela Center, 616 Coopertown Road, Haverford, PA 19041

    Transportation to Location(s):
    Participants travel to and from the Saint Raphaela Center in a school bus chartered from First Student Inc.  Some student leaders also travel on the bus, while others drive either their own vehicle or a university vehicle, depending on the program’s needs.

    Description of Activities and Related Requirements:
    Most of the activities on the retreat take place indoors, and involve sitting while listening to talks by other students or meeting with each other in small groups.  Some brief activities will be outdoors and involve light amounts of physical activity such as stretching, running, and jumping.  The students also engage in an outdoor trust walk, in which one member of a pair is blindfolded, while the other guides them on a walk around the property.

    The Saint Raphaela Center provides housing for students and staff in a combination of single, double, or triple accommodations.

    Campus Ministry Rules/Requirements:
    In addition to the Community Standards, the following Campus Ministry Rules/Requirements apply:

    Students are asked to minimize their use of cell phones, to keep any information that other students share confidential (except in the cases of mandatory reporting and students who may be a danger to themselves or others).  Students are asked not to use alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs, and to refrain physical intimacy while at the Saint Raphaela Center.

    Program Description:
    Seniors make an overnight retreat to reflect on and celebrate their time at SJU, and discern where they are being called to go next.

    Program Location(s):
    Saint Raphaela Center, 616 Coopertown Road, Haverford, PA 19041

    Transportation to Location(s):
    Students drive themselves to the Saint Raphaela Center in car pools in their own vehicles.

    Description of Activities and Related Requirements:
    Most of the activities on the retreat take place indoors, and involve sitting while listening to talks by other students or meeting with each other in small groups.  Some brief activities will be outdoors and involve light amounts of physical activity such as stretching, running, and jumping.

    Spark Retreat

    Program Description:
    Spark is an overnight retreat in the early fall which is designed to help first-year students (1) foster new friendships, (2) learn the basics of Ignatian spirituality and (3) begin to discover what it means to be a Hawk in a fun and intentional way.

    Program Location(s):
    Saint Raphaela Center, 616 Coopertown Road, Haverford, PA 19041

    Transportation to Location(s):
    Participants travel to and from the Saint Raphaela Center in a school bus chartered from First Student Inc.  Some student leaders also travel on the bus, while others drive either their own vehicle or a university vehicle, depending on the program’s needs.

    Description of Activities and Related Requirements:
    Most of the activities on the retreat take place indoors, and involve sitting while listening to talks by other students or meeting with each other in small groups.  Some brief activities will be outdoors and involve light amounts of physical activity such as stretching, running, and jumping.  Students briefly gather around an outdoor firepit with sparklers.
