Business Ethics Case Competition
Overview
The Pedro Arrupe, S.J. Center for Business Ethics is hosting a Business Ethics Case Competition on Friday, May 3rd, from 3 to 5 pm in Mandeville Room 111. As part of the competition, students will be able to present research on any ethical issues that touch upon an aspect of the business world (broadly construed). The competition will be judged by a diverse panel of industry and academic experts, and the winner and runners-up will receive a fairly sizable cash prize!
Structure of Competition
- The competition will consist of up to 5 groups (with 3-5 students in each group)
- Each group will deliver a 15-20 minute presentation
- The winning group will receive $1,000; the second-place group will receive $500; and the third-place group will receive $250 (to be split evenly among each group’s members)
- The competition will be judged by a panel of industry executive and academic experts chosen by the Pedro Arrupe, S.J. Center for Business Ethics
Presentation Criteria
In order to be eligible for the competition, each presentation must fulfill the following criteria:
- It must analyze an ethical issue that arises in the world of business
- The ethical issue must be one that can be addressed by private business, not by public policy reform
- The decision-maker(s) must be members of the business sector, not government officials or members of regulatory agencies.
- It must identify moral principles/theories that directly apply to the case
- It must identify and justify one response that the group thinks is morally best
- It must explain why the other possible responses are not morally acceptable
