The two-year U.S. Medical Affairs Fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at Johnson & Johnson offers unique experiences that enable the fellow to advance and apply skills in the pharmaceutical industry, with a focus on Medical Communications and Scientific Exchange (MCSE). The MCSE team at Johnson & Johnson plays a central role in translating complex scientific evidence into clear, accurate, and clinically meaningful information that supports healthcare decision-making. As part of Medical Affairs, the team ensures that emerging data across clinical trials, real-world evidence, and treatment guidelines are effectively communicated in a compliant, balanced, and audience-appropriate manner.

Following the completion of the first 15 months on the MCSE team, the fellow will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of teams across the broader U.S. Hematology Medical Affairs organization, supporting one based on individual interests and evolving business needs. The fellow will also have the opportunity to gain field experience by shadowing a Medical Science Liaison (MSL), based upon availability.

Medical Communications and Scientific Exchange: 15 months

The 15-month MCSE component of the fellowship is structured to provide balanced experience, with time dedicated to both Medical Communications and MSL Communications. 

Within Medical Communications, the fellow will apply their product and disease expertise to develop, maintain, and disseminate scientifically rigorous standard response documents to deliver timely, balanced and compliant responses to unsolicited inquiries from health care professionals. The fellow will also conduct medical review of promotional materials ensuring scientific accuracy, fair balance and compliance with FDA guidelines. 

Within MSL Communications, the fellow will support the development and optimization of strategic scientific communications by creating MSL materials, driving innovation in field resources, and leveraging utilization insights to enhance engagement and effectiveness of scientific exchange.

Medical Communications:

• Develop skills in literature search development and clinical trial analysis, while refining scientific writing through the creation of balanced scientific response letters and accurate communication of product information
• Review documents for medical accuracy – conduct peer review of scientific documents and provide medical guidance for development or review of promotional or sales training assets
• Track, analyze, and interpret material utilization metrics - including frequency of use, reach, and engagement to identify trends, optimize content strategy, and enhance the effectiveness of scientific exchange
• Participate in project teams and manage selected vendor projects – provide mentorship and oversight of scientific response creation as needed
• Explore opportunities to incorporate artificial intelligence into developing innovative content and improving generative engine optimization of medical content
• Staff medical booths at national oncology conferences including the American Society of Hematology (ASH) and American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO)

MSL Communications:

• Develop skills in the creation of strategic MSL communications utilized in scientific exchange (i.e., slide decks, infographics, other MSL materials)
• Identify and develop innovative field medical materials and bring improvements to data visualization, interactivity, and navigation based on customer and MSL preferences
• Track, analyze, and interpret MSL field material utilization metrics - including frequency of use, reach, engagement, and feedback to identify trends, optimize content strategy, and enhance the effectiveness of scientific exchange
• Ensure scientific accuracy and compliance with medical, legal, and regulatory requirements regarding dissemination of proactive and reactive scientific content
• Apply expertise by integrating scientific, medical, and real-world evidence into MSL communication materials

U.S. Medical Affairs: 9 months

In the following 9 months, fellows will have the opportunity to gain experience in the broader U.S. Hematology Medical Affairs organization, based on individual interests and evolving business needs. This rotational opportunity may include but is not limited to: Medical Strategy, Publications, Medical Excellence, Real World Value & Evidence, and more. 

During this time, continued engagement in core MCSE responsibilities will support the ongoing development of subject matter expertise.
