Study Abroad Awards for Students

Study Abroad in Asia
1 of 1

Saint Joseph’s University students who plan to study abroad in Asia are eligible for study abroad funds from the Nealis Program in Asian Studies. These awards have been made possible by a generous donation from Bernadette and James J. Nealis III.

The awards are open to all students (except for those in the final year of study). While preference will be given to students completing a major or minor in Asian Studies, Saint Joseph’s University students enrolled in any field of study are encouraged to apply for these awards. Additional criteria will be past performance in Asian Studies courses, plans for future coursework, and the quality of the study abroad proposal. It is not necessary to have declared an Asian Studies major or and minor—though you might fulfill the requirements with your study abroad courses!

Professional Development Grants for Faculty and Staff

The Nealis Program in Asian Studies supports professional development projects in or related to the study of Asia.* Funds are available for faculty (including contingent faculty) of Saint Joseph’s University whose research advances the study of Asia through original research conducted in Asia, or about Asia or Asian peoples that is conducted in other parts of the world. Funding may also be available for travel to conferences or for other professional development opportunities in Asia where faculty have the opportunity to engage with Asian experts and scholars on issues of relevance in the region.

The Nealis Program in Asian Studies is committed to advancing the study of Asia at Saint Joseph’s University and seeks to enlist all members of the university community in this objective. Faculty from all colleges, schools and departments are encouraged to apply for professional development funding.

There are three types of professional development funding. Applications should specify which category of funding the applicant seeks:

A. Proposals for original research should include the fellowship application, a brief description of the research, how it relates to the study of Asia or Asian peoples, and how the Nealis Funds would advance the research (no more than 1,000 words). Applications should include a proposed budget.

 B. Proposals for conference travel should include: the fellowship application, description of the conference, its location and/or its relevance to the study of Asia and Asian peoples, the applicant’s role (presenter, chair, keynote speaker), and how the Nealis Funds would contribute to the applicant’s success at the conference. Applications should include a proposed budget.

C. Other Professional Development opportunities may be considered. Applicants should include evidence of invitation and travel plans for other professional development experiences in Asia. Applications should address how the Nealis Funds would contribute to the applicant’s plans and how the applicant will share the learning with the Saint Joseph’s University community. Applications should include a proposed budget.

Applicants must be a qualified member of the faculty at Saint Joseph’s University at the time the funding is sought. Eligible applications must meet at least one of the selection criteria:

-Research will be conducted in an Asian country.

-Research clearly pertains to the study of Asia or Asian peoples.

-The application seeks to fund conference travel to Asia.

-Other Professional Development opportunities in Asia may be considered.

*Asia shall be understood to include the Indian subcontinent and surrounding islands, Central Asian States including former Soviet Republics and Afghanistan, China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Southeast Asia and Pacific Islands (excluding Australia and New Zealand).

Course Development Grants for Faculty

The Nealis Program in Asian Studies invites proposals for new course development grants in Asian Studies. Course development funds are available for all faculty of Saint Joseph’s University in any discipline who are developing a new course focusing on Asia or Asian peoples to be taught at SJU. The course should have a dominant (more than half of course content) focus on Asia* and Asian people from any period and advance the Learning Goals and Objectives outlined by the Asian Studies Committee. Any course funded by a Nealis Fund Course Development Grant will be added to the Asian Studies course offerings for Asian Studies majors and minors. Course Development grants will be $3000.

*Asia shall be understood to include the Indian subcontinent and surrounding islands, Central Asian States including former Soviet Republics and Afghanistan, China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Southeast Asia and Pacific Islands (excluding Australia and New Zealand).
