Overview

The art program at Saint Joseph's University began in the 1970s and gradually developed into a full department offering majors in Fine and Performing Arts. In its early years, the department was housed in Boland Hall, a residence located on Lapsley Lane, where faculty carved out gallery space to showcase both local professional artists and student work. The space also hosted an annual Overbrook High School student exhibition for many years, strengthening connections with the broader community.

As the University and its campus expanded, so did its commitment to the arts. In 2010, what had once been a single gallery space evolved into two distinct spaces: Merion Hall Gallery dedicated to professional artist exhibitions and Boland Hall Gallery for rotating student exhibitions. Together, these galleries presented approximately ten exhibitions per year, offering students, employees, and visitors regular opportunities to engage with diverse artistic practices.

In 2003, the opening of the Saint Joseph’s University Frances M. Maguire Art Museum significantly broadened and enhanced exhibition space on campus. The museum now hosts rotating exhibitions, including the annual Senior Art Exhibit, while the original gallery spaces continue to feature rotating student shows.

Although this archive does not extend back to the program’s earliest years, it documents the majority of exhibitions held on campus over the past several decades, reflecting the University’s longstanding and growing commitment to the visual arts.
