Events
The Maguire Art Museum offers unique events for its visitors. Listen to artists share their inspiration, join a compelling discussion in an Art Herstory Round Table, or test your wits in the Gallery Escape Challenge. These are just a few examples of what we have to offer. Check our calendar to see what is coming up.
Rotating Exhibitions
The rotating galleries present primarily contemporary work by regional, national and international artists. Exhibitions are designed to provoke thought and foster dialogue on topics relevant in today’s world. Public programming is offered to complement the exhibitions and enhance visitors’ experience of them.
Teaching Gallery
The Teaching Gallery is a space where Saint Joseph's University students and faculty can curate temporary exhibitions from the University’s permanent art collection. Such exhibitions offer impactful experiential learning opportunities for students, where they can expand upon their course material by working with visual art. For more information about the teaching gallery, contact Veronica Farr.
The Architectural History Gallery
This gallery, curated by architectural historian David B. Brownlee, highlights architectural history relevant to the Maguire Art Museum building. The first installation focuses on Paul Cret’s designs for the museum’s building and the Rodin Museum in CENTER CITY Philadelphia. It includes correspondence between Albert Barnes and Cret, sketches, and ephemera associated with both structures. It is made possible through loans from the Barnes Foundation, the Athenaeum of Philadelphia, the University of Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
The Lunettes
The Frances M. Maguire Art Museum will reanimate the celebrated lunettes in the Great Hall, where Henri Matisse’s site-specific “The Dance” (1932-33) was installed when the building housed the Barnes Foundation. Dormant since the Barnes moved to Center City in 2012, these semi-circular niches, a signature feature of Paul Cret’s 1925 design, will present contemporary artwork (with necessary changes to the lighting). Details forthcoming.
