5 Questions with Luke Schlegel
Meet Luke Schlegel, Kinney's newest Assistant Director of College Support. Luke's personal connection to autism brought him to a career in supporting college students through their academic careers and helping them improve their well-being. We look forward to seeing our students grow through Luke's support!
1. What drew you to the special education/autism field?
I have a personal connection to the special education field because someone close to me in my family has autism. I worked in a program similar to ASPIRE during graduate school when I worked as a mentor and academic success coach for undergraduate students at Eastern University who have Autism Spectrum Disorder. I am drawn to helping and including others, and I appreciate the opportunity to do that through work.
2. What excites you most about your new role?
I am excited to immerse myself in the Kinney culture, see the students I work with happy and overcoming challenges, and to build community with the students and fellow staff members.
3. What's one thing you'd like clients, SCHOLARS, and families and the Kinney Center to know about you?
I enjoy helping students improve their overall well-being. We look at things from a holistic perspective, rather than focusing on only one area.
4. What is on your professional wish list for the next few years?
I plan to get my LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) in the near future. I want to improve my counseling and advising skills continuously and learn more each day about how to best support individuals with ASD. Down the line, I would like to work in a leadership role.
5. What is your favorite thing to do outside of Kinney?
I have a hard time picking an overall favorite. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my wife and our sweet dog, seeing family and friends, reading, and following sports. I also love running and coaching cross country and track and field.
