Most of these scholarships are awarded to entering first-year students and may be renewed until graduation. Food marketing scholarships are in addition to any University, state, or federal aid you may receive from Saint Joseph’s University.

Bruno V. Garisto died unexpectedly at the age of 45 years. He left behind many unfinished family dreams and professional goals. He was greatly dedicated to the industry that he spent his life making fuller and richer for those he worked for and with.
Bruno was a first-generation American-born child of Italian immigrants who worked extremely hard to give their children a better life filled with countless opportunities. Bruno understood the value of his parent’s labors and dedicated himself to an education that would enrich his life and allow him the opportunity to give back and make a difference every day. A fiercely dedicated family man, Bruno spent any downtime as a scout leader, soccer coach, church lector, family vacation planner and avid hot dog consumer. He went to the office early every day to get ahead on his responsibilities so he would have time to listen to and encourage his employees during the work day. He was sitting down to dinner by 6 p.m. most nights to listen to and encourage his family at home.
At the time of his death, Bruno was Weis Markets’ Vice President of Center Store Merchandising and Sales. He had day-to-day oversight of the company’s center store, dairy, health and beauty, and general merchandise departments along with its private brand program. Prior to being promoted to vice president, he was the company’s Director of Private Brands. One of his proudest professional achievements was to represent Weis Markets on Saint Joseph’s University of Academy of Food Marketing Board of Governors.
Titles and organizational charts were of little importance to Bruno. His goal was to help his employees reach their full potential and grow their skill sets so that they could all benefit from the depth of character he knew they had. In turn, he worked as hard to demonstrate his ability and dedication to his employers.
During his career, Bruno worked in supply chain management, merchandising, marketing, procurement and sales in the United States and abroad. Earlier in his career, he worked for Giant Food Stores, Ahold Indonesia, Ahold USA, Daymon Worldwide, and Hillandale Farms. He brought the same stellar work ethic and personal attributes to each office.
The decision to create a scholarship in his name was not a hard one. Bruno would be continuing to physically “give” to Saint Joe’s if he were alive. His family is funding this scholarship privately because they understand how far-reaching a quality education based on solid foundations can be in the life of an individual. It is their hope that the appropriate candidate will recognize the importance of this gift and use it to carry on the professional values that Bruno held so dear in life.

The Cherry Foundation was established in 1977 by Joseph Cherry who devoted his professional life to creating three successful Philadelphia food companies, and his personal life to his family, many friends and countless good deeds.
During the mid-1930s, he and his partner, Al Levis, sold smoked meats and invented what would become an iconic American snack, the Slim Jim. In 1949, after the partners split, Joe Cherry founded Great American Foods, Inc., a North Philadelphia company that manufactured salad dressings and mayonnaise, and sold those products, under the Gourmay and Chef’s Pride labels, to wholesale food distributors throughout the Northeastern United States.
Joe Cherry, who played semi-professional baseball and football in 1930 and 1931 and was a low single-digit handicap golfer into his late 60s, died in 1981, leaving the business and the Foundation in the hands of his son, Robert. Great American Foods was bought by Holsum Foods in 1995 and is now part of Ventura Foods. Ventura’s tasty salad dressings — many of them the original recipes created by Joe and Robert Cherry — are still available in Delaware Valley and New Jersey restaurants and bars, university and hospital dining halls, and too many mom and pop pizza and hoagie places to count.
Since 1982 the Cherry Foundation has given scholarships, through the Academy of Food Marketing, to scores of Saint Joseph’s students — eager, bright, ethical, and hard-working, just like the man for whom the scholarship is named.

Wawa, Inc., a privately held company, began in 1803 as an iron foundry in New Jersey. Toward the end of the 19th Century, owner George Wood took an interest in dairy farming and the family began a small processing plant in Wawa, Pa., in 1902. The milk business was a huge success, due to its quality, cleanliness, and “certified” process. As home delivery of milk declined in the early 1960s, Grahame Wood, George’s grandson, opened the first Wawa Food Market in 1964 as an outlet for dairy products.
Today, Wawa is your all-day, everyday stop for fresh, built-to-order foods, beverages, coffee, fuel services, and surcharge-free ATMs. A chain of more than 850 convenience retail stores (over 600 offering gasoline), Wawa stores are located in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Florida, and Washington, D.C. The stores offer a large fresh food service selection, including Wawa brands such as built-to-order hoagies, freshly brewed coffee, hot breakfast sandwiches, built-to-order specialty beverages, and an assortment of soups, sides, and snacks.

The Genuardi Family Foundation believes that creating opportunities for students to excel academically prepares them for success in their careers and lives, so that they may be inspired to enrich their own communities. Thus, it is with pride that the Foundation annually partners with Saint Joseph’s University’s Academy of Food Marketing to fund three (3) two-year scholarships to rising juniors pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Food Marketing.
Scholarship History at Genuardi’s Family Markets
Over the next three decades, the Genuardi Brothers opened supermarkets throughout the Greater Philadelphia suburbs, actively engaging their own children in the business. By 1990,
Genuardi Family Markets was a $220 million business with 23 supermarkets, 5 discount retail outlets, and 2 wholesale facilities. They had built the largest independent supermarket chain in the Philadelphia region and one of the most respected in the entire industry. The Genuardi’s history of providing scholarships began at their supermarkets. When the cousins purchased the business from their fathers in 1990, they created the Genuardi Brothers’ Scholarship to honor their fathers’ hard work and success. The scholarship was originally comprised of five (5) $2,000 grants awarded annually to eligible employees of Genuardi Family Markets to apply toward their education. The program was extremely well received and eventually grew to ten (10) $2,500 awards annually. Over 13 years, more than 100 scholarships
were awarded to Genuardi’s employees.Scholarship’s History at the Academy of Food Marketing
Once family members sold the business to Safeway and formed the Genuardi Family Foundation, they sought a way to continue their support of academic achievement through a targeted scholarship program. The Foundation’s partnership with Saint Joseph’s University’s Academy of Food Marketing (AFM) was a natural next step.
The Genuardi Family Foundation is honored to offer this opportunity to the outstanding students enrolled in SJU’s Food Marketing Program. To date, 48 scholarships totaling $860,000
have been awarded to well-deserving SJU students. The scholarship process is fully administered by Saint Joseph’s University’s Academy of Food Marketing, including application review, student interviews and scholarship recipient selection.
Genuardi Family Foundation Scholarship – $20,000
In 2004, the Foundation and SJU partnered to offer the Genuardi Family Foundation Scholarship (In Honor of the Genuardi Brothers), comprised of two (2) two-year scholarships annually
awarded to sophomores (or co-op students in the third year of the then five-year program) studying in the Academy of Food Marketing. In 2022, the Foundation added a third scholarship
recipient. This $20,000 scholarship is applied over the recipient’s final two years. Scholarship recipients retain their eligibility to receive the second year of the scholarship by maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or better and staying in the Academy of Food Marketing program for the remaining 2 years of their education.

Four Philadelphia-based trade organizations, with long and successful histories, merged to create MAFTO: the Association of Manufacturers Representatives (AMR), the Tri State Dairy Deli Association, the Philadelphia Food Trades Organization and the Mid Atlantic Frozen Foods Association.
This merger became official on January 1, 2005. MAFTO’s goal is to raise money to promote the retail food industry through education and scholarships and to donate to those in need. Money is raised through our social and trade-related events: General Membership Dinners; Annual Golf Outing; Christmas for All Kids Holiday Party/Monte Carlo Night and our Signature Gala Weekend held in early November in Atlantic City, NJ.
MAFTO is the most influential and relevant food trades organization in the Greater Philadelphia Market. With the merger of the four different groups, it has served the retail and foodservice industries in one form or another for more than 100 years. In addition, at the end of 2018, MAFTO became a 501c3 organization.
The MAFTO board is comprised of approximately 25 directors all donating their free time to make all this happen. They work extremely hard at their full-time jobs and then give their free time to support MAFTO so that we can provide scholarships and charitable benefits to those in need. This organization would not be in existence without these generous people.
With the many changes facing our industry, the need for an organization like MAFTO has never been greater. We are in a unique position to bring together manufacturers, brokers, wholesalers, distributors, service providers and retailers for meaningful dialog at a variety of networking events throughout the year. I can think of no better way to stay abreast of the industry than to hear firsthand from its key leadership over cocktails and dinner.
In addition, MAFTO awards college scholarships to qualified members, their families and dependents regardless of their field of study. Over the years, we have awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships. We also organize and execute several community service projects during the year, which have included serving dinner at Hope Lodge for cancer patients, volunteering at Philabundance and providing toys to needy children at Christmas. We encourage all our members to participate in these initiatives. The Sunshine/Save-A-Life committee reaches out to people in our industry experiencing challenging circumstances or tragedy with words of encouragement, a helping hand and financial assistance. Our charity is always offered discreetly and with love.
Membership to MAFTO is free and open to anyone in the retail food industry or supporting industries employed in a professional, management or leadership capacity. We fund our organization and charitable efforts through the several events we hold and therefore ask that our members attend as many of our events as they can each year.

William (Bill) Kane was killed in an automobile accident while driving home following a day of taking inventory at the Oaks Warehouse of Fleming Foods.
Kane was in his mid-thirties at the time of the accident. He had graduated from Villanova University and had worked for A & P prior to joining Fleming. He was a buyer/merchandiser for Fleming and was a very popular individual with his colleagues and the many representatives that had occasion to call on him at Fleming.
During his time with Fleming, he was the center of a social gathering of many people who would meet at local pubs after work to unwind and enjoy good fellowship. He organized tailgate parties at Eagles Football games and made the everyday work of doing business something that one looked forward to, especially if that work took you to Fleming Foods and Bill Kane’s desk.
Following his untimely death, a group of five men met at the offices of Genuardi Markets to discuss the creation of a lasting memorial to their fallen friend. What they created was the William J. Kane Scholarship at the Academy of Food Marketing of Saint Joseph’s University.
