About the President's
Laudato Si’ Sustainability Initiative

Building on past and ongoing sustainability projects and the efforts of the Saint Joseph's University Green Fund, President Cheryl A. McConnell, PhD, announced the President’s Laudato Si’ Sustainability Initiative in July 2024. With this Initiative, University leadership has affirmed that Saint Joseph’s is committed to launching a University-wide sustainability program that will be a key element of the University’s new strategic plan. Through this process, Saint Joseph’s will become designated a Laudato Si’ University by the Vatican.
The President's Laudato Si’ Sustainability Initiative focuses on three main principles rooted in Jesuit values: environmental stewardship, social justice stewardship and cura personalis stewardship.
- Environmental Stewardship strives to minimize the University’s environmental footprint through initiatives like energy conservation, waste reduction and water conservation, LEED-certified construction, and promoting green spaces on campus.
- Social Justice Stewardship goes beyond the environment to focus on the interconnectedness of environmental and social justice issues to promote a just and equitable future for all.
- Cura Personalis Stewardship extends to fostering a well-being that recognizes the environment as an integral part of human health for all, especially marginalized populations.
Through the end of 2024, a Guiding Coalition is ensuring that the University has the foundation in place to implement a long-term sustainability program. This group will direct the writing of the University’s first formal sustainability plan in 2025.
Key Pillars
The President’s Laudato Si’ Sustainability Initiative aims to embed sustainable practices and the principles of environmental stewardship, social justice stewardship and Cura Personalis Stewardship into all aspects of University life. Sister Thea Bowman Hall:
A New Era of Green Living
Sister Thea Bowman Hall, a stunning six-story residence, is set to open its doors in the fall of 2025. The state-of-the-art building will house more than 500 first-year students, offering residents a greener, healthier and more sustainable living experience through the following eco-friendly innovations.
- Geothermal Energy: Utilizing the Earth's natural heat, geothermal wells provide efficient and sustainable heating and cooling.
- Solar Power: A cutting-edge solar system will also help power the building, reducing the University’s carbon footprint and saving energy costs.
- Bioretention Basin and Underground Stormwater Retention Systems: These innovative systems will help manage stormwater runoff, improve water quality and create beautiful green spaces.
- Material Reuse: Trees removed during construction were repurposed into furniture through Saint Joseph’s partnership with a local nonprofit.
- LEED Certification: The University’s commitment to sustainability is further solidified by pursuing LEED certification, a globally recognized standard for green buildings.
Our Commitment to Health and Wellness
Sister Thea Bowman Hall will support student health and well-being by providing clean indoor air, ample natural light, and optimal temperature and humidity levels, all of which reduce stress, allergies and respiratory issues. Sustainable materials will also be used in the building to lower exposure to harmful chemicals. To offset the impact of construction, 434 new trees will be planted across campus: 65 in fall 2024 and 369 in fall 2025. Lush green spaces will enhance the beauty of Saint Joseph’s Hawk Hill campus, provide shade and improve air quality for students, faculty and staff alike.
